I went through a number of criteria such as motor, flashiness, physicality, and skill as well as just being a fun player to watch. The 18th article in a series of 70 highlights the ten 5A players who I think you need to watch this winter, in no particular order. Tomorrow, I’ll have the Bluegrass conference preview.
Caitlin Clark – 5’11 PG – 2020 – Dowling Catholic
On a list of players to watch, you knew that Clark would find her way on. She’s one of the most electric players in the entire country and can score from anywhere on the floor. One of the highest scoring capabilities in the state and Clark is must watch basketball at all times.
Grace Larkins – 5’11 SF – 2021 – Southeast Polk
Larkins isn’t the flashiest player by any means on this list, but she is certainly one of the more efficient. Larkins just knows how to get the ball in the basket. Larkins is going to be depended on a lot this season for Southeast Polk which allows her to have the ball a ton, something that you’ll want to tune in to. Committed to Drake.
Aubrey Joens – 5’8 SG – 2020 – Iowa City High
Joens is a lengthy and silky smooth player who plays with a sense of urgency. She never gets out of her comfort zone and she just plays basketball as she knows how. A tremendous outside shooter, Joens can also get to the rim really well. She’s highly skilled with the ball in her hands. Committed to Iowa State.
Maya McDermott – 5’5 PG – 2020 – Johnston
McDermott is a fast paced guard who is one of the premier passes in the state. She is not only a great passer but an excellent scorer as well. Despite her size she can regularly score at the rim through bigger defenders. A talent who is always must see basketball. Committed to Northern Iowa.
Caroline Waite – 5’3 PG – 2021 – Ames (Featured Photo)
Despite being the smallest player on this list, Waite is one of the top scorers. She can score from anywhere on the floor and is deadly from beyond the arc. Waite always plays hard to make up for her size and is a big reason that Ames is competitive each game. She’s a solid defender as well. Committed to Bradley.
Emerson Green – 5’10 SG – 2020 – Cedar Falls
Green is a top pure scorer in the state and has a very solid mid-range jumper that she can knock down in tight windows. I love to watch her play solely because it seems as if she is always playing with a chip on her shoulder. Great competitor who will always try to outwork you. Committed to Northern Iowa.
Hannah Stuelke – 6’1 PF – 2022 – CR Washington
Stuelke is as fluid of a 6’1 kid that you’ll find in the nation, much less in the state of Iowa. It seems as if she just glides to the basket. Stuelke has been developing her outside shot as well which will make her even more dangerous. The top player in the 2022 class is must watch basketball. Committed to Iowa.
Audrey Koch – 5’10 SF – 2021 – Iowa City West
Koch has really exploded onto the scene over the past year. She is now more athletic, skilled, and a better ball-handler than she was just a year ago. Koch has an incredible ability to finish at the rim with her length. A great defender in the press where she can use her length to create mismatches.
Katie Dinnebier – 5’7 PG – 2021 – Waukee
Dinnebier is one of the hardest working kids in the entire state. She is aggressive on the defensive end and doesn’t back down from anyone on the floor. A tremendous shooter as well as an excellent passer, Dinnebier can change the game. A smart and heady player who is just simply fun to watch. Committed to Drake.
Brooklynn Smith – 6’2 C – 2022 – Waterloo West
Smith is relatively unknown in the state of Iowa because she plays at Waterloo West and played on an AAU team that wasn’t at the main Iowa tournaments. She’s all of 6’2 and has insane touch around the rim and a developing jumper. She’s going to be a high major prospect when it is all said and done.
