Let’s make one thing clear from the get-go: Virginia Johnson can flat out shoot the basketball. The lefty from Minneapolis Southwest has one of the smoothest strokes around, which she demonstrated once again Saturday at the Rising Bluestar event. But we already knew that. What we saw a month or so ago at the Minnesota Suns tryouts, and what we witnessed again on Saturday, is the fact that Johnson has blossomed into so much more than just a shooter.

Virginia has also grown half a foot this year and is now 5’9 with a big frame and solid build. “That’s always nice,” Southwest coach Dan Froehlich said of Johnson’s recent growth spurt. “But the thing that’s great about Virginia is she is just so doggone passionate about hoops.”

Johnson was part of a small group of players yesterday trying to make an impression for the Bluestar organization which annually selects its national top 30 players in a class and showcases them around the country. 2023 stud Nunu Agara of Hopkins has already made that select group.
