Beating Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, a IAAM B conference early favorite, 52-46 in their week 3 game, the Mustangs showed how their quick guard play can catch teams by surprise.
Despite only playing with five players, this partial Meade squad showed how decisive leadership and strong fundamentals are the recipe for winning basketball despite the depth of an opponent’s bench. This Meade team relies on skilled ball handling and a quick give-and-go offense which allowed them to claim an early lead over Mt. Carmel they would maintain for the remainder of the game.
Meade is led by uncommitted seniors, Briel Owens and Symphony Brown, and these intelligent guards ran the court with ease. On the defensive end, Meade employed a well-executed, zone defense, keeping Mt. Carmel to only five points in the first quarter. This forced Mt. Carmel to shoot from the perimeter, shutting down their sizable post advantage over Meade’s undersized lineup.
Keiana Robinson, class of 2021, and Carlissa Hill, class of 2022 also helped guide this Mustang team to victory. Even in the third quarter, Meade was able to absorb the Mt. Carmel run, even as they rotated their bench, Meade’s five-man squad did not appear to tire.
Despite landing in fourth place last year in Anne Arundel county with a regional record of 11-5, these Mustangs could prove to be the dark horse in Anne Arundel County in 2020.
