Seairra Hughes 2020- Vista Peak
Seairra Hughes came out to the event and proved to be one of, if not the best players at the entire event. She was too much for the other girls as she put her whole offensive game on display in front of the college coaches who were raving about what they seen. She got to the rim, showed off her handles and also showed a back to the basket game. Her mid-range game was also on display. What really stood out was her willingness to spread the ball around even though she could of scored every time down. She set other teammates out for easy baskets which bodes well as she will be double teamed often this season. This is a big Senior season for her and I am expecting a big jump in her statistics across the board as she will be the player that the other team focuses on most.
Tomia Johnson 2020- Grandview
The Florida Gulf Coast commit showed actually why she is one of the top points guards in the state at Saturdays showcase. She played relaxed and was calm as if everything was moving in slow motion. Johnson’s game is as complete as they come. She can score from all three levels consistently, makes high IQ passes that put her teammates in great spots for easy baskets and helps on boards as well. Even with everything she provides on the offensive side of the ball, her defense is where she gives opposing player headaches. She uses her hands in the passing lanes at all times and refused to get scored on which is what separates her from other guards in her class.
Amanda Archuleta 2022-Lakewood
The young guard played well above her age, she understood her role on her team and executed on offense. What stood out was her shot making. She took good shots and was on a loaded team which she quickly realized and got involved. Instead trying to match the play of the other girls she chose to spot up and wait for the ball to come to her and she didn’t miss too many shots in the process. Also, once she was left in the game by herself, she was able to run the offense and put her passing ability on display. Going into her sophomore year, Amanda should hopefully be able to help provide a shooting touch off the bench to an already talented Lakewood team.
Iyahnni Qualls 2020- George Washington
Iyahnni is surely a name to know going to the season. The senior guard was impressive this past weekend. She is a hard nose guard that excels on the defensive end of the floor with her quick hands that makes it tough for other guards to dribble in front of her. Each game she made sure to guard the opposing teams best player to limit their production. Iyahnni isn’t just a defensive stopper, she can also put the ball in the basket in numerous ways. She has a smooth handle that she uses to create space to get her shot off but she can also get to the rim and finish on either side of the basket.
Yara Garcia 2020- Scottsbluff
It’s always exciting to have out of state players come compete at our in-state events and Yara Garcia definitely let her presence be known for the day. The 5’8 point guard from Nebraska was all over of the court Saturday afternoon. Yara is a high energy player that looked comfortable scoring from anywhere on the floor. She uses her speed to get to her sweet spots but also is great off ball coming off of screens and pin downs to get open looks. Coming off a year where she averaged 16.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists Yara is going into her senior season with proving her game in anyway she can.
