Today, I will go over some players who I think have a solid shot at winning the award. These are my preseason predictions so only time will tell!
Ali Zelaya 6’3 2020 F Millennium
I think Millennium could potentially have back to back winners! Phillips is now graduated, leaving a big role to be filled. Zelaya is more than capable of filling that role and I could easily see her putting up a similar stat line as Phillips did last season. It also doesn’t hurt her chances of winning it, if Millennium repeats as Champions this season. Zelaya was also up for player of the year last season with AZ Central.
Kiya Dorroh 6’1 2021 G Sabino
I believe Sabino will have a huge year and will be too much for the majority of 3A squads to handle. Dorroh is the best player on her team and they could easily win state, that’s a pretty good shot at winning player of the year. The only thing that I think might hurt her chances is that she plays alongside two other D1 guards. That might take away from her stat line.
Marisa Davis-Jones 6’1 2021 F Valley Vista
MDJ should be in for a huge season. I believe that VV can compete for a state championship. If MDJ is able to lead her team to the playoffs and eventually state, I think you could make a strong case for her chances at winning player of the year.
Senya Rabouin 5’5 2020 G Shadow Mountain
Senya was a candidate for player of the year last year for AZ Central. I think she could certainly win it this year and her team has a solid chance at taking home state as well. With the departure of Greer, this should open the way for Senya to do more scoring and add responsibility on her shoulders.
Other players considered:
Madison Connor 6’0 2021 G Perry
Jess Finney 5’10 2021 G Chaparral
Anna Ostlie 5’8 2020 G Chaparral
