There was plenty of good talent on display. I was able to attend the event this past Sunday, and here’s a look at some of the top guards that I saw from the games I was able to watch.
1. Taylor Bigby – Centennial(NV) 2021
Bigby just recently committed to Oregon, one of the top Division 1 colleges for women’s basketball. Watching her play, it was easy to see why. She is a very strong guard who has the size and skill to play either point guard or shooting guard. Offensively, she attacks the rim well and is great at getting herself to the line. Defensively, she is a very good defender on ball. Sticks with opponents going to the rim and blocks the shot.
2. Alexis Mead – ML King 2021
Mead is a solid point guard. She is good at probing the defense and choosing her spots on the court. She runs the offense very well and is constantly setting her teammates up for easy baskets. Although she is a good playmaker, she can score if need be. She is a tenacious defender who is capable of guarding players bigger than her with strong on ball defense.
3. Jayda Curry – Corona Centennial – 2021
Curry is a scorer who can get hot from anywhere on the court. She’s capable of pulling up in transition for three and she has near unlimited range. She’s a bit of a combo guard; she can handle the ball and set teammates up for easy looks, but she is definitely comfortable creating her own shot. Even with her outside shooting prowess, she is capable of beating her defender off the dribble and getting to the rim.
4. Alyssa Munn – Redondo Union 2020
One of the things that stood out the most about Munn is that despite her size, she has no fear of crashing the glass and fighting bigger players for rebounds. She puts her body on the line and manages to secure rebounds. She is a solid floor general too, she’s a point guard in every sense of the position. Able to facilitate and look for her shot as well. She’s a very good outside shooter and she has a quick release on her shot.
5. Kalaya Buggs – Long Beach Poly 2021
Buggs is a good all-around player on both ends of the floor. Offensively, she can score from all three levels. She is solid with the ball in her hands and being able to create her own shot. She can attack the rim and finish strong. She is also a good shooter both from mid-range and from the three-point line. Defensively, she has good length to be a solid perimeter defender.
