The school has fielded a boys team for a number of years, but head coach Brian Chesley is tasked with building a girls program from the ground up. Coach Chesley is coming over from Gerstell Academy where he was the top assistant coach. I took the hour long drive out to Springdale and caught a practice which was followed by a weight lifting session. I was very impressed with the attention to detail the coaching staff demonstrated and there was a lot of individual attention given to the players. The practice was heavy on fundamentals and moved at a good pace.
The team will participate in some major DMV events like She Got Game and The 695Hoops Public vs Private Challenge right out of the gate, and will play a full 21 game schedule. They will be interesting to watch and will bring some firepower to the table.
Libby Kiley, 2022, Shooting Guard
Libby is a strong, athletic lefty guard that can knock down shots. She was on the money with all kind of mid range shots and also stepped out and showed range to the three point line. She is a good passer and has a nice handle.
Kaylah Rodgers, 2021, Point Guard
Kaylah came over this past summer from the U.S. Virgin Islands and spent the summer playing with Power Move. It looks like all the extra practice time she is getting during the fall has paid off because Kaylah has improved a lot. She looked explosive going to the rim and was finishing with both hands at the basket. Kaylah is an exceptional athlete and she looks like she has really improved her perimeter shooting. I am looking forward watching her this season as she should be a big contributor.
Taylor Towns, 2021, Wing
Taylor is a strong, versatile wing with a nice looking jumper. At 5’8″ she has enough size to get shots off in traffic and absorb some contact. She should play a bunch of minutes and contribute of lot scoring.
Donna-Marie Green, 2022, Center
Donna is a legit 6’3″ center with a ton of potential. She also came over from the Virgin Islands and got some experience with Power Move during the summer. She has a lot to improve on, but she is an imposing presence and should contribute on the boards and defensively.
I enjoyed my visit with the players and coaches and I think this could be a nice opportunity for players looking to establish themselves in a boarding school situation. The team seems very close and enthusiastic about the upcoming season, and I liked the way they encouraged each other during the weight lifting session. Exciting times are coming up for girls basketball fans in Carroll County and I think the DMV will benefit from having another quality program in the area. Look out for those Lions this season!
