Continue ReadingThe 2018-19 season was a banner season for the Ewing Tigers; 19 wins and a birth in the Class D2 state tournament, which was the first time the Tigers had made the trip to Lincoln since 2009. A big part of that state tournament run was the play of Ashley Koenig, a 5’8″ wing player for the Tigers. Koenig averaged 12.2 point and 8.8 rebounds a game for the Tigers, and she is looking to do more this season, including not only leading the Tigers back to the state tournament, but to make some noise once they get there.
“I am very excited for this basketball season,” Ashley said, “I think we will be well rounded and have a good chance at making it back to state. Our main goal will be to make it back to Lincoln, but small goals will be to improve every game and play as quick as we are able to.”
It won’t be easy, however, for Tigers to return to Lincoln the first weekend in March. In the postseason, the Tigers will have to move up not just one class, but TWO classes, to the C2 level.
“We moved up 2 classes, so the competition will be a lot tougher. We are a team that doesn’t see people play man defense very often but that will definitely change this year. It will be a big adjustment for us because that is something we aren’t very good with.”
Koenig was initially inspired to play from her two older sisters and her father, who, like alot of families, battled it out on the family driveway. With these intense family competitions, Koenig really developed her game. Koenig, who doesn’t play with a club program, does a great job of seeing the floor and attacking the rim. Not satisfied with her past accomplishments, Koenig has worked hard this off-season to improve on her weaknesses.
“My shot needs improvement, I need to work on getting quicker feet, and I need to give all my effort all of the time.”
Along with basketball, Koenig participates in volleyball and track for the Tigers. She is looking into Central CommunityCollege in Columbus (NE), Northeast Community College in Norfolk (NE), the University of Nebraska, and Wayne State College. As of right now, Koenig is leaning towards playing volleyball if she does play a sport at the next level,
