Records going into week 5 have been interesting and also a little surprising. Riverdale Baptist, Oxon Hill, Bishop Ireton,Fredrick Douglass and New Hope Academy (JV) are the only undefeated teams remaining, while New Hope Academy’s varsity team North Point and Hayfield only have one loss. The host team Gwynn Park along with Potomac and a scrappy Osbourne Park have yet to win a game.
Week 5 Matchups
New Hope Academy (2-1) vs Hayfield (3-1)
New Hope’s only loss was a tight game to undefeated Riverdale Baptist while Hayfield only dropped one game to Largo. This game was an intriguing marker of sorts as we got to see one of Norther Virginia’s top public schools go up against one of the top private schools in Maryland. Hayfield struggled to contain the Lady Tigers potent offense and the size advantage was too much as New Hope led 29-8 at the half in route to a lopsided 67-16 victory.
Standouts of the Game:
Delicia Pinnick – 5’7″ – Guard – New Hope – 2020
Delicia PinnickDelicia controlled the tempo on both ends and made it extremely difficult for the Hayfield to get in any rhythm offensively. She was able to get to the basket at will and she is always a threat with her range from outside. She has seemed to really stepped her game up to another level this season and she will be an exciting player to watch.
Deja Bristol – 6’0″ – Post – New Hope – 2020
Deja BristowDeja is a strong physical rebounder and she used her body well inside to get the position that she wanted. She finished well after contact and seemed to work harder than everyone else on the court. She is a decent free throw shooter and at the rate that she gets to the line making that shot can add up to some big games for her.
Maria Gakdeng – 6’3″ – Post – New Hope – 2020
Hayfield had no one on their roster that could do anything with Maria on the floor. Coach Caldwell taking her out of the game for breaks was an act of mercy as she did whatever she wanted in the paint on either end of the court. Her dominance will be needed as the Tigers are eyeing another national championship.
Kayla Ellerbie – 5’11” – Forward – Hayfield – 2022
The Lady Hawks had every reason to quit playing in this game but continued the fight. Kayla showed the effort crashing the boards and even hitting a buzzer beating 3 pointer from 40 feet to end the half. Even though her team went into the break down 19 points that shot gave her team a boost to start the second half.
Kendall Dunham – 5’2″ – Point Guard – 2022
Kendall showed great ball handling getting the ball up the court and finding her teammates. She has good vision and she was very crafty against the press and spinning through traps. Hayfield hasn’t had any full practices yet to work on press breakers but Kendall took on the role herself to get her team into their half court and transition game.
Lore Porter – 5’8″ – Guard – 2020
It took me a minute but I finally realized the Porter’s are sisters. They look so identical that many times I thought I was watching the same person. Lore (not to be confused with Ann) shot the ball really well knocking down the mid range and the three. She plays good team ball and is vocal on the floor encouraging her teammates. She compliments her sister Ann as both played solidly.
