The event was a great success, in large part to the players, parents, and coaches that were in attendance. There were so many standout performances throughout the day, but here are some point guards that impressed me the most on Saturday:
A junior at Burlington Central, Elana Wells was impactful on both ends of the court. The 5’6” Guard can play the one or two spot with her ability to handle the ball and score consistently. Wells can attack the lane with quickness and finish at the rim or step outside and knock down threes. She also showed some ferocious on-ball defense, making things difficult for opposing point guards.
Lauren Cohen from Glenbard South had another solid performance Saturday. The 5’8” junior point guard is known for her ability to lead an offense and knock down shots from deep, but she has really improved at winning her one-on-one matchups and making things happen in the lane.
Bartlett’s Junior Guard Lexie Sinclair really stood out among many great Point Guards at the Expo. Not many point guards in the area are as strong or as tough as 5’8” Junior Lexie Sinclair from Bartlett. She loves hounding opposing guards and disrupting passing lanes to get things going in transition. Sinclair can shoot the three well at times but thrives at attacking the lane and absorbing contact while converting at the hoop.
One of the top guards in the 2023 class, Lenee Beaumont from Benet Academy was turning heads all throughout the day. The 5’10” combo guard can hold her own on both ends of the floor when matching up with older players. Beaumont is a great ball handler that can shoot the three well and loves making things happen in the transition game.
Laila Barakat from Stagg High School is a true point guard that has made a huge leap in her game, and it was great to see her show out on Saturday. The 5’6” sophomore handles the ball as well as anyone and is quicker than most in transition. She has great court vision to find open teammates and is not afraid to step out beyond the arc and hit shots at a consistent rate.
A 5’6” point guard from Danville High School, Erin Houpt showed that she can do it all. The junior had the ball on a string for much of the day, making it tough for nearly any defender to stay in front of her. Her ability to make the right play consistently is tough to find at this age, but Houpt does it well much of the time. She’s also not afraid to spot up from three and make at a high percentage.
Hersey’s Mary Kate Fahey is someone that I become more and more impressed with each time I watch her play. The 5’8” junior’s ability to score at all levels has really made her a player to watch this upcoming season. In a few minutes span, she made a nice spin move in the lane and converted for two at the hoop, splashed a three from the top of the key, and hit on a mid-range jumper with confidence.
