Robert Kelly (PGH Kansas) and I will be breaking down all the talent at the event over the next week or so. To start, here is a look at Team 1 from the Expo.
Lindsey Davis – 5′ PG – 2023 – Nodaway Valley HS (IA)
Davis was solid at the Expo on Sunday. Having not seen her before I was glad she attended and I thought she did a lot of really good things. She is comfortable with the ball in her hands and she didn’t look overwhelmed by the moment. I was impressed with her play.
Amiya Mack – 5’5 PG – 2021 – Olathe North HS (KS)
Mack was someone I hadn’t seen prior to the event with her coming all the way from Kansas. She was the lone non-Iowa player on the roster and she fit in well. Mack showed the ability to score the ball at all three levels consistently and was one of the standouts in the 2021 class.
Lauren Donlea – 5’5 PG – 2022 – East Buchanan HS (IA)
Donlea comes from a small high school so there aren’t a ton of people who know who she is. I thought that she showed quite a bit of her skill playing against some of the top guards in the state. Donlea is a small lead guard who should have a big year this season
Annika Headington – 5’7 SF – 2021 – Waukon HS (IA)
Headington has quietly become one of my favorite players to watch in the state. She can play multiple spots on the floor and doesn’t really have a “position”. She can bring the ball up the floor, play off the ball, or bounce from the wing into the post. She’s a physically strong guard who impresses me each time I see her.
Maddy Maynes – 5’8 SF – 2023 – Southeast Polk HS (IA)
Maynes is a solid wing who was very consistent all day on Sunday. She could come in this year and help out Southeast Polk. Maynes has a confidence about her that you really don’t see often in kids her age. She was all over the floor on both ends and continuously contributed at a high level.
Payton McHone – 5’8 PF – 2020 – Jesup HS (IA)
McHone is a rock-solid interior presence who is among the strongest players in the entire state. She can hold her own in the post against almost anyone in the state because of her strong lower base. She also showed a developed inside offensive presence which will only boost her stock.
Reagan Bartholomew – 5’9 SF – 2022 – Waukee HS (IA)
Bartholomew is going to be a big piece to the Waukee puzzle for the foreseeable future. She has improved quite a bit from the summer and is now someone who I think will become a paramount piece to Waukee’s success this season. Look for Bartholomew to see a rise in the rankings after her performance.
Shanae Wetering – 5’10 F – 2022 – Montezuma HS (IA)
The younger sister of Iowa commit Shateah, Shanae has a lot to live up to at Montezuma. Wetering showed a lot and was a force on the defensive end. I think she is going to end up playing a large role as a sophomore for Montezuma. She is a strong forward who is going to continue to get better.
Mya Merschman – 5’11 SF – 2021 – Central Lee HS (IA)
Merschman caught my attention this spring and she has consistently continued to be really good. Her perimeter shot really impressed me on Sunday as I had not seen her consistently shoot it that well this summer. Merschman is developing and could turn into a highly sought after prospect. Ellie Knock – 5’11 F – 2023 – Dike-New Hartford HS (IA)
Knock is going to come in this upcoming year for Dike-New Hartford and likely play a big role. She is fluid with the ball and she plays with a very good motor. I anticipate that she is going to be a big part of DNH getting back to state. She is one of the better 2023’s in the state.
