Robert Kelly (PGH Kansas) and I will be breaking down all the talent at the event over the next week or so. Up next is a look at Team 2 from the Expo.
Carly Carstens – 5’1 PG – 2023 – Okoboji HS (IA)
Carstens is a quick point guard who has the ability to fly up and down the court at the blow of a whistle. She showed solid decision making with the ball in her hands and didn’t let the moment get to her. I loved what I saw for Carstens as a distributing point guard who makes her way up the court with ease.
Quinn Grubbs – 5’5 PG – 2023 – Exira-EHK HS (IA)
Now with two Grubbs sisters at Exira-EHK they will be improved especially based on what I saw from Grubbs on Sunday. She is a small guard who is a tenacious defender and a player whom you don’t want to let by. I thought she looked solid the entire day and should be able to contribute early as a freshman.
Kayla Reis – 5’6 G – 2024 – Dallas Center-Grimes HS (IA)
Reis was an addition who walked up at the event and she really impressed for her age. I thought that she was one of the best young players at the event with her aggression with the ball in her hands. I enjoyed seeing her play against some older kids and in a year I think she’ll be able to impact the DCG team early on as a freshman.
Amanda Szopinski – 5’6 2G – 2021 – William Chrisman HS (MO)
Szopinski was the lone out of state player on this team and she didn’t disappoint. She was all over the floor on the defensive end. She was generating pressure on the ball as well as forcing turnovers and turning those into easy baskets at the other end. She’s a 2021 prospect in Missouri to look out for.
Arianna Jackson – 5’7 PG – 2023 – Des Moines Roosevelt HS (IA)
Jackson is one of the top 2023’s in the state and she showed why on Sunday. She has tremendous ball control and poise for a freshman. She was scoring at all three levels on the floor and was able to facilitate the ball when needed. Jackson is going to be one of the top kids in the state and that will be apparent quickly this year.
Sophia Hope – 5’8 SF – 2024 – Valley HS (IA)
Hope was a very intriguing prospect who I don’t recall seeing before. Valley has a lot of young talent and Hope is one of those talented players waiting in the wings. Hope was able to take the ball off the dribble well and I thought she rebounded well for her youth. Among a host of talented players, I think Hope was one of the top 8th graders at the event.
Ivey Schmidt – 5’8 SF – 2022 – Grinnell HS (IA)
Grinnell lost two very good players from last year and I think a host of players will have to help fill their void. Schmidt seems to be a good candidate to help do that and her performance this weekend left me no doubt. She was scoring the ball well and was making plays up and down the floor.
Aree Beckmann – 5’9 SG – 2022 – Xavier HS (IA)
Beckmann pretty much did what I thought she was going to do at the event. Her strength is shooting the ball and once again she did it at a very high level. She was hitting shots at all three levels and had a ton of confidence in doing so. I look for a big year from her now that she is an established weapon.
Adrianna Katcher – 5’11 SF – 2020 – Center Point-Urbana HS (IA)
Katcher looked very comfortable on the floor and primed for her senior year. She is a versatile player who can play pretty much any guard spot or on the wing. She made high IQ play after high IQ play and didn’t hold anything back. I anticipate her leading her team back deep into the state tournament. Committed to Southern Illinois.
Ryley Goebel – 5’11 SF – 2022 – Center Point-Urbana HS (IA)
Goebel is a long wing who is a hassle to guard both on the wing and in the post. She is fluid scoring the ball as her arms allow her to score over most kids inside the paint. Goebel also showed me a jumper that looked solid and while it didn’t go down often, it was nice to see her show that part of her game.
