Players to Watch for the Sting
Abby Thompson, Forward, Senior (2020)
Thompson is the best returning player from the Sting’s roster last year. She averaged 13 points per game and 4 rebounds. Coach Hund stated, “she is a pure shooter” and from 3 point line, 40% last year. Abby has verbally committed to play basketball at Hamline in St. Paul next year for the Pipers.
Carli Elrod, Guard, Sophomore (2022)
Elrod is a definition of an all-around player in the 2022 class. She averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals per game last year for the Sting. Expect Carli to lead the charge for the Sting all across the floor.
Team Goals for the Sting
The goals are big for the Sting for the state of the program. “We want to win our first section game in school history,” Hund said when we chatted about team goals on the year. Two other components Hund mentioned were playing at a high-level game to game and improving on the Sting’s consistency.
Alumni Coming Back to the Sting
Hund said in past years Brynn Bozich, who plays at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, has come back and contributed a good amount to the Sting during the summers. Hund hopes to have more alumni in the future that have been as grateful as Bozich has been to the Sting program.
Improvements from Last Season to This Season
The biggest thing you will see from the Sting this year is their focus on consistency from last season. You saw it late in the season as the Sting were 7-3 in February, but they had games early on in the season that they would really blow teams out or just barely come out with a loss against others.
Conference Foes to Beat for Spectrum
The MCCA West runs thru Heritage Christian Academy who was a strong 23-2 last year and a perfect 8-0 in the conference. They went all the way to the state semifinals last year and lost to eventual Class A champs, Minneota. It will be tested for Spectrum to get past the Heritage Christian this season.
Spectrum will open up their season on Tuesday, November 26th at 7:00 PM as they play hosts to the Isle Huskies, who were 5-23 last season and were last in the Great River Conference standings.
