There are a handful of KC Metro area teams in class 5 that will be competing for the state championship this year. There is one player, in particular, that is looking to lead her team through both the regular season and playoffs.
Kyndal Lewis, a 5’8 Junior small forward for the Lady Pirates will be leading the way for her team this year. She is a two-time all-conference and 1st team all-district selection. Kyndal nearly averaged a double-double with 10 points and 9 boards per game. Kyndal has an offer from Eastern Michigan and interest from Wichita State, Missouri State, and UMKC. Playing her AAU ball with Next Level Eclipse 17U Bluestar team, Kyndal used her summer to work on and enhance her game.
What are your expectations heading into the upcoming season? Team goals?
I want to be a leader for our returning players from last year’s team as well as for the new players. I know our coach will hold me accountable as one of the leaders of the team. As for team goals, I just want to win games and compete at a high level. Keeping our team record at or above .500 is a team goal of mine.
What are some of the skills you have been working on? Strengths?
“My jump shot has improved from last season but I am also working to extend my range. Being good on help-side defense and being able to guard against ball screens. Scoring off the dribble, being able to play really well in one on one situations and attack the basket, and my ability to read defenses quickly helps me make plays for myself and for my teammates.”
“Being a vocal person off the court, I want to be more of a vocal leader on the court for my team this year. I feel like this will help with our team chemistry and bonding more as a team with the new players. Being an aggressive and determined player, I try to be as perfect with basketball as I can. This is driven by my passion and dedication to the game. I want to use my skills to help my teammates succeed as well.”
“We have three of our four leading scorers returning,” says Coach Batchelder. “Kyndal is always the focal point for opposing teams. Night in and night out she is guarded by our opponent’s best defensive player and many times faces double teams. She continues to expand her game every year and can score in a variety of ways.”
