There is a lot of talent to go around in Washington’s freshman class with a mixture of strong guard, wing and post play. The one thing that stands out in particular with this class is the athleticism. One of the best athletes in the class in none other than Nikole Thomas. Nikole is a 5’9 lefty guard with legitimate speed and jumping ability that will translate to the next level. She is years away from putting it all together, but some Division 1 schools have already begun to take notice of her potential. I recently caught up with Nikole to talk about her upcoming first high school season, her recruitment process and what she is looking for in a college.
“My preseason is going well. I am working on speed and agility, shot mechanics, off-hand ball handling and passing, and tons of cardio.” Nikole will be one of the centerpieces to Kamiakin’s rebuilding process with a strong core of seniors gone from a season ago. There are a fair amount of question marks about how the Braves will recover after losing multiple players that are now playing at the college level, but Nikole says the expectations are still pretty high at Kamiakin. “[Expect to see] A young, aggressive, up-tempo, confident squad,” and as far as individual expectations, “I would like to average a double-double and be a lock-down defender.”
Nikole has received some Division 1 interest, despite not having played a single high school game yet. Weber State of the Big Sky has been really consistent with their communication, ranging from the Head Coach to multiple assistants. Some other D1’s have reached out as well. “The most important thing I’m looking for is if the school has my academic program (Sport Medicine), 2. Their style of play- I prefer to play an up-tempo system. 3. Looking for the right fit, including coaching style, and team chemistry. 4. Lastly I’m looking for location.”
