Joining the likes of Lauren Betts, Addison O’Grady, Tomia Johnson, Landri Hudson and others, transfer sophomore Marya Hudgins enters the mix from across the country in Georgia to further strengthen one of the few early favorites to win Colorado’s Class 5A state title.
“I’m looking forward to playing with a new team in a new state,” Hudgins said. “I want to come in and win because I was lucky enough to win state as a freshman. It’s obviously going to be a lot bigger school and division so that’ll be an adjustment. But I think I’m up for the challenge and I’ll just come in and play as hard as I can because we have a great team at Grandview so everyone has to work hard for their spot.”
As a freshman last season, Hudgins won a Georgia High School Association Class A Private state championship when her Holy Innocents’ girls won 75-48 over Wesleyan. Hudgins scored a team-high 13 points against Dahlonega in the semifinals to lead the Golden Bears into the finals. She scored the first points of the championship game with a 3-pointer and finished the game with nine points, which was third most on the team.
Hudgins moved to Colorado because her mom, who is a nurse, got a job in Colorado Springs. In early fall league preseason play, the 6-foot shooting guard has looked the part of a contributor even in a deep Grandview rotation. She shoots the ball well and will give the Wolves another threat on the perimeter, as well as another strong defender with the ability to guard multiple positions.
“I love it so far,” Hudgins said. “Everyone has been so welcoming and the team has been great.”
The Grandview Wolves went 23-5 last season and finished runners-up to Cherry Creek after a 51-49 loss in the 5A championship game.
Hudgins plays club with Premier Basketball Club in the EYBL.
