Continue ReadingI have seen some amazing players do amazing things on the girls side during the past century and I always try and share a little history because many go with the now, I go with the “what it was” and believe me, there’s a huge difference so when I first walked into Fonde Recreation and saw this long and slender 7th grader named Sharetta Hawkins shooting NBA threes effortlessly, I knew she was going to create some problems and opening up her high school career at Jones dropping her first four threes, finishing with at least 10 and 40 points told me Jones would be in the mix during her career and of course, I was right. Jones is part of HISD, some of the top talent that played in the city came through that HISD pipeline read more
Madison ClearyWatching several players over the summer brought back memories of yesteryear and I just wanted to highlight some of the best individual long ball performances I personally witnessed so I’ll start with ’20 Madison Cleary (Prosper HS) who was playing against an EYBL team and her club teams philosophy was to shoot the long ball to stay in striking distance and they did, but no one shot it like her at the Summer Elite Championship dropping eight threes, in the first half and finishing with twelve
Another senior that just went completely off, well numerous times, was Amanda Turpin (Cy Fair) who showed me at a very young age she was going to be a long ball threat but Turpin, who is around 5’11 and long, mixes it up nicely and creates off the dribble yet do not leave her open because that three-ball is consistent even when you guard her and in one of the games, she probably had over 40 with double-digit threes, she hit a shot from halfcourt to win it, top that
Gracelyn AlvarezHow about Gracelyn Alvarez(Heights), she’s in my Top 20 for 2021 and it has nothing to do with nepotism because I’ve watched her since elementary school, I knew she was going to be good yet she’s exceeded my expectations because she can run a team and she can run up a score with the long ball. Her catch and shoot from distance has got to be one of the best in Texas, she is a four-point play waiting to happen because she’s conscious about where she is and stays focused.
Kate ValleOne junior I had nothing on was Kate Valle (JohnPaul) and at a shade under “the magic number” I thought I was seeing a mirage during Summer Elite Championship as I watched her from afar dropping 30 footers from everywhere. Just for fun, I moved in closer, no I wasn’t seeing things, I was watching her make things happen and on I came back again and again, big guard that can shoot the three, college coaches LOVE that but she also showed she could attack and hit the midrange and she too m jumped into Top 20
