Continue ReadingThe abundance of young talent that comes in ready to send messages continues to roll in a very big way. Two years ago, Kyndall Hunter and Rori Harmon helped lead Cy Creek to the state tournament, by the way, they’re one of the best backcourts in the country, and last season, Ashlon Jackson (Hardin Jefferson) and Desoto, with seven freshmen, did the same thing, so watching this with my own eyes has been a pleasure. I had a chance to witness many of these young ladies I’m including in this article at a very young age and knew they would be among the top players in their classes, way before anyone pops or popped up and takes credit for “making them great” it just doesn’t work that way
Ashlon JacksonAshlon Jackson-6’0 G (Hardin Jefferson) plays 1-4, maybe even 5 if she wanted but her versatility is what has always been impressive. She used to get hers in the flow yet her ability to just take games over placed her on a totally different level because she has a college-ready frame, can handle the ball under pressure coast to coast and her range starts as soon as she crosses half-court, keep that defibrillator near
Tionna Herron-6’5 P ( Desoto) she used to block just about everything in sight but her transformation over the years to being more than just a shot-blocker started in middle school as she not only developed a nice offensive game in the paint but showed she could face the basket and score. She also handles the ball well, attacks from the wing and does a good job defending, inside and on the perimeter
Breanna Davis-5’8 PG (Red Oak) all I needed was a two-minute warning to see her in the 6th grade because I knew what was coming. She was athletic and could score but her athleticism enables her to do so many thing things including finishing strong with contact and scoring from mid to long-range with ease is just some of it. She understands how to run a team and knows when to just take over
Breanna DavisAmina Muhammad-6’4 P (Desoto) strong rebounder and finisher were among my initial observation years ago as well as upside because you, well I could just tell her desire to get better and that she has as she can control the inside on both ends and her upside still has plenty of room
Ayanna Thompson-6’4 F (Desoto) she overpowers players smaller than her, sometimes larger but she is smooth in so many ways offensively that before you know it, she’s close to a double-double. When you get yours “in the flow” consistently, that’s huge, at the stage she played on over the summer yet whether it’s scoring or defending, she finds ways to make things happen
Sydney WardSydney Ward-6’0 G/F (Village School) long and athletic always grabs my attention and this young lady was doing things years ago before her first middle school game that some high school players couldn’t but when you understand the simple things early, like playing the passing lane, things will fall into place and they continue to do just that
Michayla Gatewood-5’6 PG (Desoto) her mindset is to set her teammates up for the best shot available and with her “old school” mindset, she separates herself in so many ways. You go from good to great when you make those around you better and her upside is still scary. Don’t get it twisted, she can score off the dribble or outside which makes her even more of a threat
Carleigh Wenzel attackingSa’Mya Smith-6’4 P (Desoto) when your high school has five of the first ten and two others in the next group, you’re looking at a college high school squad and Smith just continues to amaze me at some of the things she does at her size. Need I add “long and athletic” again, she plays the passing lane, handles the ball and scores, inside and outside
Carleigh Wenzel-5’11 G (San Antonio O’Connor) I speak about “the form” “the picture-perfect jumper” “her high accuracy from outside” but she has had that for what seems like forever. She also understands how to mix it up, which sometimes mixes defenders up because taking them off the dribble gives her more options and them more problems, btw, college coaches love big guards that can shoot it
Jazzy Owens-Barnett-5’8 PG (Liberty) her explosiveness with the ball sold me early as she dazzled her way going the length of the floor before her first middle school game but that next season, that jumper was clicking and it hasn’t stopped as she has one of the best “stop and pops” in transition in the state and her scorers mentality enables her to find ways to put the ball in the basket
