Well, Samantha Moore from Mullen, Nebraska definitely proved the experts wrong, committing to Division II Nebraska-Kearney before the start of her junior year of high school. Pretty impressive for a gal whose school’s official NSAA enrollment is 20 students . . . you read that correctly . . . twenty kids.
Moore is an outstanding athlete for the Broncos, as she lead them to a 21-4 record and a birth in the Class D2 state tournament last spring for Mullen. Averaging 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals a game, Moore is expected to do even greater things as the Broncos pursue only their fourth state tournament appearance in school history this upcoming season. Here’s an opportunity to get to know Samantha Moore, a player who is playing for something more than the final score . . .
What first drove you to basketball? What inspired you to pursue the sport?
I would say my family. My older brother always got me involved outside playing him one on one when I realized basketball is my life. I would also say my dad continued to inspire me about this sport. My dad was the Head Coach of the Mullen Broncos Boys Basketball team when they won in 2016, which also involved my older brother on that team. I was a student manager when this all happened and after that game I wanted to be the one that played on the Pinnacle Bank floor.
What are the areas of your game that you are working to improve upon?
I feel like my defense has picked up quite a bit over the summer.
How do you feel about this year’s team? What are some of your goals?
This year we have a new head coach but I feel like its going to be a good year. We lost a couple people last year, but we were also very young. There were a couple new kids that came to Mullen this year, and that could benefit our team in so many ways. Our team loves defense which I believe is a great start. This year are to win of conference and make it back down to Lincoln, but this time bring hardware home.
Who are some of the tough teams and/or tough individuals that you will have to face in the upcoming season?
We added Hershey to our schedule this year which will be a tough game. South Loup and Anselmo-Merna will also be tough games.
What other sports/activities do you do?
I am also involved in Volleyball and Track. I was part of the 3rd Place volleyball team last year and we also made it my Freshman year. I’ve participated in State Track my freshman and sophomore year. I was part of the 4×400 relay that placed 3rd place, 4th Place in the 100 Hurdles, (Freshman Year) I placed 2nd in the 100 hurdles last year and 4th in the 300 hurdles also last year (Sophomore)
You’ve talked about your dad and how his journey has inspired you. Tell our readers about the challenges he faces and how it affects how you look at basketball.
Last year my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. By me playing the sport that I love the most makes him happy and more active. Every game I play for him since he has made all of my games, except for the one he missed because the nurse would not let him leave the hospital.
