These are not projections of any kind. I am simply pointing out the WNBA players that these individuals remind me of. I am aware that no comparison is perfect. However, it’s a common exercise in the world of sports, and serves as a good introduction to some of the more underrated prospects in the state of Texas.
Mollie Daniel – 2019 5’7 PG (Platinum – Collins) Martin’s Mill HS (ETBU student-athlete)
WNBA Comp – Kristi Toliver
Kristi Toliver was just crowned a WNBA champion for the second time in her career when the Washington Mystics defeated the Connecticut Sun in a five-game series. She has been one of the most creative scorers and passers in the entire league for a decade. Her craftiness on the offensive end is why I’ve selected Toliver as the comp for Mollie Daniel.
Daniel was easily one of the best floor generals I saw play this summer. Both Toliver and Daniel are excellent ball handlers and consistent three-point shooters. They have great court vision that allows them to excel at playing in half court sets as well as in transition. Furthermore, both players are very similar in height and build. Daniels’s polished and under control game will allow her to contribute right away at East Texas Baptist University.
Dani Baccus – 2021 5’6 PG (Platinum – Cook) Dodd City HS
WNBA Comp – Kelsey Plum
Kelsey Plum was one of the greatest scorers in the history of women’s college basketball during her career at the University of Washington. Although she hasn’t been a 30 point per game player in her first three seasons as a pro, she flashed what she can do when given more minutes during the 2019 playoffs by averaging 15 points and seven assists per game. Plum’s ability to get to the basket while also being a facilitator reminds me of Dani Baccus.
Baccus is a poised but aggressive point guard. Similar to Plum, she is really good at getting into the paint and drawing contact. Both are great free throw shooters too. Plum and Baccus are smart passers. They have tremendous vision in the open court. Additionally, both players have quick hands that allow them to come up with steals on defense.
Aliyah Mohammad – 2022 Combo Guard (Lights Out)
WNBA Comp – Tiffany Hayes
I love watching Tiffany Hayes play. She has one of the quickest first steps in the WNBA. She is an aggressive scorer who loves to play downhill. The eight-year pro is constantly looking to attack. Hayes plays the game with swagger and a lot of energy, which is very similar to the way Aliyah Mohammad plays.
Like Hayes, Mohammad loves to attack the basket at the offensive end. She uses a combination of speed and finesse to get easy looks near the basket. Furthermore, both Hayes and Mohammad shine when playing in transition. They always seem to make the smart play, whether that’s scoring themselves or dishing the ball to a teammate.
