Players who have worked hard to improve their game step up and end up becoming some of the top players in the state. This past Saturday at Bullitt East was the first chance for some of these players to show out, so let’s see who has stepped up their game heading into this season.
Sofia Allen, Scott- In the absence of star player Mya Meredith, Allen took on much of the responsibility that was left by this major hole. The junior showed off her great athleticism and ability as a ballhandler, running the Scott offense by being aggressive in transition and getting to the rim. Her strong all-around game was very impressive and will prove important as she looks to be a major part of the Lady Eagles’ gameplan this season.
Malayia Lewis, Scott- On a quite foul heavy day, nobody was better able to take advantage of some early season sloppiness than Lewis. The junior drew foul after foul by getting to the rim and making smart plays to get the necessary contact to get to the line. Once there she shot extremely well, and as such was the Lady Eagles’ most consistent source of offense, marking a truly standout performance.
Spencer Harvey, Owensboro Catholic- While Owensboro’s offense struggled in the first half Saturday against a strong Manual defense, the one constant was Harvey. The senior guard was able to knock down shot after shot, finding open looks and making them at an excellent rate. This ability to light it up from the outside kept the Lady Aces in the game and should remain just as valuable throughout the season.
Amelia Hodges, Bethlehem- There may not have been any team at Bullitt East that was as reliant on a single player as the Banshees were on Hodges. The junior guard not only served as the primary ball-handler but also generated the overwhelming majority of Bethlehem’s offense, making plays for her teammates as well as knocking down her own shots. While not coming out of nowhere, Hodges’ ability to generate this much offense represents a major step forward.
Kayla Harlow, Woodford County- An absolute beast in the paint, Harlow was ridiculously dominant on the boards last Saturday. A part of the Yellow Jackets’ two-headed monster inside along with Delaney Enlow, the senior forward simply could not be stopped, grabbing boards and drawing fouls at a rate that was impossible to stop. She was also able to knock the resulting free throws down at a strong rate. If Harlow can maintain this level with any kind of consistency, she will be an absolute monster this year.
