I’ll be looking at schools in the CIF Division 1 from the areas that I’ll be covering at various points this season and highlighting a few players to look out for. These players aren’t necessarily stars on the team. Some of them might be, but others are key cogs that will play an important role on the team’s success this year.
Here’s a look at some of those players.
1. Camryn Kiernan – Mater Dei 2020
An incoming senior, Kiernan recently committed to Concordia University. There is a lot of talent on this Mater Dei team, and Kiernan is a player who can fit in to any role that the team needs. She is a glue player who does a lot of little things that don’t always show up on a stat sheet. She plays solid defense, she dives on the floor for loose balls, she rebounds well, and she can get a bucket if needed. Solid outside shooter.
2. Kalaya Buggs – Long Beach Poly 2021
Buggs is an incoming junior and has drawn some interest from a few colleges with an offer from Long Beach State. She is a solid all-around player on both ends of the floor. Offensively, she can shoot from the perimeter and she can attack the rim and finish strong. Working on becoming a stronger playmaker. Defensively, she has the tools to be a solid wing defender.
3. Alexis Mead – ML King 2021
Mead is a tenacious defensive player and as the team’s point guard, she really sets the tone for the defensive intensity and physicality that the entire team plays with. She is a strong on ball defender and she is capable of matching up with players bigger than her. Offensively, she probes the defense well and picks when to attack and when to facilitate. Good court awareness and vision. Strong outside shooter.
4. Calli Stokes – Redondo Union 2021
Stokes size and foot speed allows for her to be a versatile defensive player. She is capable of matching up against bigs in the paint and she can stay with wings on the perimeter and contest all the way to the basket. Scoring-wise, she can put the ball on the floor and make plays off the dribble. She also moves very well without the ball and makes strong cuts to the rim to be the recipient of a teammate’s pass.
5. Nicole Rodriguez – Rosary 2020
Rodriguez is an incoming senior and recently committed to Loyola Marymount. She is a strong player on both ends of the court. She is a solid perimeter defender and contests shots well. Offensively, she is a lights out shooter if left open. She spots up well and is always ready to catch a pass. She can put the ball on the floor too and she has a nice pull-up jumper. Can shoot also with defenders in her face.
