I already touched on some of the stars from opening day, there was plenty of firepower as well as players hitting big shots at crucial times and after viewing everyone, I figured Waller was in the driver’s seat and low and behold, I was correct so let me playback some of the highlights in my head
Maria ByoneAlvin
When a 4 knocks a 1 off in the playoffs, in the opening round, you have my full attention and although that was a couple of seasons ago, this is a must-see squad for me for numerous reasons. Emma Robles made the offensive firepower list simply because she was scoring from just about everywhere and I made a special GIF for Maria Byone because she brought “it” but she always does, no matter what the situation is. The kicker is Mercedes Mancha, one of the best long ball shooters in the area was out but she’ll be back for the FBISD Invitational I’m covering
Abby Lynch Jakayla Bradford
New Caney vs Conroe
I mentioned the offensive shootout between New Caney’s Tori Garza and Conroe’s Isabella Stafford but New Caney also has some nice pieces in Abby Lynch and Micah Mize. Lynch is rugged and can punish attacking the rim while Mize’s range keeps the defense honest and allows the Lady Eagles some offensive options. Conroe pulled out the win, I don’t know if it was considered an upset but they were scrappy. Jakyla Bradford got them going early and after that, Stafford just went completely off. I’m thinking ahead to when Kennedy Powell returns because the talented sophomore PG just makes things happen
Crishelle Washington & Blessing OkohNorth Shore vs Cy Lakes
The Mustangs opened up the season with a huge road win against defending R-3 5A champ Hightower so on paper, they were considered one of the favorites but the game is played on the court and a scrappy Cy Lakes pulled off the upset or was it? North Shore’s Makayla Patterson was on down the stretch as she hit big shot after big shot however the continuous improvement from sophomores Crishelle Washington and Ja’Nyla Kennedy are going to pay dividends come district and beyond. Unsigned Cy’Maya Colquitt continues to fill voids, on both ends and this team should not be taken lightly. Cy Lakes Destiny Maddox hit some huge threes while Timaya Burks uses her body well and that along with diving for loose balls are things that don’t show up in the box score but play a pivotal role. While Tia Mitchell was attacking from everywhere, Blessing Okoh was showing she could drop the 3 and play around the rim, both are extremely athletic
Kailyn Peters
Waller
The first time I saw Laila Blair, I actually went and asked what her name was and I don’t usually do that because I request rosters way ahead of time and no one’s time is more important than mine, but there are always exceptions to my rules. The Houston signee gave me a triple a double, starting with 32 including 5 or 6 from bta, in fact she almost had a quadruple-double but Waller has at least 3 D1 players. Kailyn Peters is on the verge of exploding and the sophomore’s offensive package is loaded from inside to outside. D’Asia Thomas elevated into my PGH Top 10 for 2023 and with her desire, there is no telling how high she will fly
