He put together showcase games for all ages from sixth graders to seniors and it went off without a hitch in our opinion. We showed up after a nice sunny days ride up from Los Angeles and we got there right before the Freshman game was about to happen, we strapped in at the scorer table and watched some good basketball coming out of San Diego, California. First up, we witnessed what San Diego had to offer from the Freshman class and it was pretty good, here are some names that impressed us why we watched:
2020, 5’8, CG, El Camino HS San Diego, Alexis Morgan is a nice sized guard with a few skills in her tool kit, she is agile and runs the floor, she can pass the ball with accuracy and she is a decent defender. She drove to the rim and finished thru contact as we watched and she shot the ball from the midrange with consistency.
2020, 5’3, PG, San Diego HS, Madeline Black (Queen of the Court MVP) is a firecracker of a player, she is everywhere on the court, she was scrambling for loose balls and defending her opponent with the best of her ability. The best thing about her was her scoring ability, she shot the ball well, she got to the rim and finished, but her stroke from the three point line was really good. She may be only 5’3, but she can fill it up.
2020, 6’4, PF, Mira Mesa HS San Diego, Tautinei Puaina is a special one, she is skilled at all three levels of scoring, she has a nice tall and lanky frame which leads to her athletic ability on the floor. She blocks shots, she defends with her long arms and that makes it hard for her opponents trying to attack her. She shoots the three ball with consistency and she can finish in the paint as well with a midrange shot or layup. Major upside here.
2020, 5’9, SF, Grossmont HS San Diego, Alexandria Purnell (White Team MVP) has a solid body type on her and is athletic and fierce on the floor. She has a good motor and is always around the action with the ball. She makes passes that assist her teammates in scoring easily and she got the rim and made layups pretty easy. She shot the midrange decent and was a very willing defender that was able to keep her opponent in front of her. She won the White Team MVP honors and for good reason.
