This class being so talented makes an interesting race for Miss Kentucky basketball, any other year the tenth or eleventh ranked player in this class would be a shoe in for the award. Miss Kentucky basketball is the most prestigious award that can be awarded to an individual, won by many great’s in the past and this year will be no different. The state has been blessed with three outstanding young ladies who have a legit shot at bringing the award home to their town, Taziah Jenks of Mercy High School, Maddie Scherr of Ryle High School and Ally Collet of South Laurel High School. This race for Miss Kentucky basketball is completely different than most as we have three ladies who are from all different parts of the state, Jenks from the Louisville area, Scherr from Western Kentucky and Collet from the mountains of eastern Kentucky. Let’s take a look at each player based on last year statistics and see who you would pick to win the award…
Taziah Jenks, the West Virginia signee with a long and athletic reach had a impressive season last year for Mercy high school. Jenks lead her team in scoring with 18ppg on 43% shooting from the field and also was able to grab 9rpg, showering her ability to affect the game in more than one way. Jenks may have the most athletic upside between all three candidates and will transition into the college game well after her senior season.
Maddie Scherr, the Oregon signee with great size and basketball IQ finished on top last season with a KHSAA state championship with the now Rice standout Lauren Schwartz, Ryle leading scorer last season. Scherr who averaged 15ppg along with 7rpg last season looks to make another run at a state championship title again this season.
Ally Collett, the Western Kentucky signee maybe the mountains best kept secret since Jordan Brock and Standout UK player Blair Green. Collett maybe the most dangerous offensive player in the state with her 21ppg 48% shooting from the field and 7.1apg which lead the state last season, Collett was a large part of South Laurel being the 2nd highest scoring offensive in the state of Kentucky last year. Collett looks to guide her team to Rupp arena this season and make a run at a state championship.
No doubt all three of these young ladies would represent this award very well but I would have to give the edge to the mountain girl Ally Collett, I feel as if the mountains have been overlooked the past couple years for example Blair Green is no doubt a large part of the success for the Kentucky Wildcats this season. Collett is a juggernaut offensively and she also has a advantage with her coach, two time state champion Chris Souder who has had a player in Seygan Robins at Mercer County that won this award not too long ago. Who would you put as a early favorite as Miss Kentucky Basketball?
