But knowing the history of competition between certain schools, cross-town rivalries, and rematches of title games from last season can give us a glimpse of what games you don’t want to miss this winter. Here are my five:
West Springfield vs. South County
January 14th, 2020, 7:30 PM at South County, and January 31st, 2020, 7:30 PM at West Springfield
Two of the Patriot district’s top teams last season, and South County will definitely be hungry for some revenge after West Springfield stole their chances at a district title in the semifinals. Don’t be surprised if these two teams meet for the district championship this season as well. If nothing else, it’ll be fun to watch the guards of these two teams (who have some of the top guards in the region) battle it out.
South Lakes vs. Madison
December 10th 2019, 7:30 PM at Madison
These two teams have put on shows of high level competition for years now. Their matchups this season are sure to be intense, as Madison stole the regional championship from South Lakes last February. It wasn’t the first time those teams had met in a championship game before, either. Sometimes it seems like Fairfax County isn’t big enough for these two powerhouse squads.
Edison vs. Thomas Jefferson
January 15th, 2020, 5:45 PM at Edison and January 28th, 2020, 7:30 PM at TJ
It isn’t a fluke that TJ has pulled themselves from the bottom of the district standings, which they seemed to have been in forever. You can’t count them out of any game now, and it will be intriguing to watch them take on a team that will be sure to have expectations of a state title. We’ll see what happens when Edison takes on this team that will be looking to continue to climb in the standings.
St. John’s College vs. Bishop McNamara
January 21st, 2020, 7:00 PM at St. John’s College
St. John’s wasn’t given much trouble last season as they won the WCAC, winning all tournament games by at least 10 points. Bishop McNamara met them in the title game, and it’ll be interesting to watch them take on St. John’s again, especially since they will have to play without 2019 Gatorade National Player of the Year Azzi Fudd, who unfortunately tore her ACL over the summer during an AAU tournament, and will probably miss all of her junior season.
Chantilly vs. Langley
December 13th, 2019, 7:30 PM at Langley
There’s lots of anticipation around how both of these teams will perform this season, given they both finished in the middle of their respective district standings last season. It wouldn’t be too off to say we have yet to see the best from their returning players, either. Concorde district POY and Lehigh commit Meghan O’Brien Meghan O’Brien 6'1" | PF Chantilly | 2021 State VA for Chantilly should be dominant in the post, and their talented core of guards will make a for a great battle against a Langley team that also has their share of talented young guards, and an eagerness to get back to the top of a district they won not too long ago.
