Continue ReadingThe matchup between two of the best teams in 4A this year didn’t disappoint. HSE got off to a quick 10-2 lead and Carmel came back to make it a 12-7 HSE lead after one. Bridgett Dunn started to heat up for Carmel in the second quarter and helped Carmel stay within striking distance. HSE took a 22-18 lead into the half. Coming out of the halftime both teams started to knock down shots and stay neck and neck throughout the third. HSE took got hot to start the fourth quarter and Carmel struggled to knock anything down only scoring four points in the quarter. HSE came out on top 52-36.
HSE Can Fill It Up From the Outside
HSE had four players knock down one or more shots from deep. Several other players have the ability to knock down the outside shot as well. Lauren Morris went three of five from three and Sydney Parrish knocked down two from three. As a team HSE didn’t have it’s best shooting game, but as the season progresses their ability to hit from three at so many spots will be a big matchup issue for opponents.
Sydney Parrish Continues to Dominate
Sydney Parrish went for 30 points and 6 rebounds. She shot the ball well from the field overall, but struggled at times from three. Her ability to get to the line and draw contact is unbelievable. Few players have the ability to score the way that Parrish can and that is what sets her apart from the other players on the floor. She is more than likely the favorite in the Miss Basketball race at this point and is looking to lead HSE to their second straight state title.
Hamilton Southeastern Is Legit
HSE is coming off of winning last year’s 4A state championship. They lost several key players to graduation, but they look like they should be in good shape as several players have stepped in to replace them. Senior guard Lauren Morris has a chance to have a big senior season with her ability to knock down the three-ball and score at a high volume. Sophomore guard Makayla Hinshaw should be able to step in and provide a scoring contribution as well.
Carmel Is Young and Good
Carmel showed they have the talent to win now and in the coming years. They were led by junior forward Bridget Dunn with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Dunn showed her ability to take over the game with her play down low in the second quarter, scoring several possessions in a row. Sophomore forward Emily Rope added 9 points and 3 rebounds and showed several good flashes of potential in the post. Sophomore standout guard Katie Clarke added 8 points for Carmel on an off night shooting. Clarke has offers from several Big Ten schools and showed she has the IQ and frame of a high major player. She should continue to progress along with the young Carmel team as they continue with their season.
Possible Sectional Championship Preview?
The sectional Eight field is loaded this season and both Carmel and HSE will be in the hunt. With today’s game taking place so early in the season both teams will have time to improve and develop chemistry as the season progresses. If they do meet in the sectional in February, it is hard to see Carmel coming out and shooting extremely poor from the field again. Carmel will need big performances out of Katie Clarke and Bridget Dunn if they are going to knock off the reigning state champs. HSE will have to come out ready to play and will need a big game from Sydney Parrish to defend their sectional championship.
