Continue ReadingEach Sunday we will be previewing the best games in the upcoming week. It is a light week as no games are being played on Wednesday-Friday between in-state teams, but there are going to be some very good matchups. Below you can find the top games around the state for Week #1.
Monday: Roland-Story (0-0) vs. Ballard (0-1) @ 7:30PM
Another good matchup at Ballard as one of the top teams in 3A heads into Huxley looking to pull the upset. Ballard fell on Friday night to a good Gilbert squad and they will be looking to avoid falling to 0-2. This game has a lot of potential to be a very good matchup with tons of college prospects on both teams. This is a good early-season test for both teams.
Monday: Dallas Center-Grimes (0-0) vs. North Polk (0-1) @ 7:30PM
Just seven miles south of Ballard, we have our other good Monday night game. Dallas Center-Grimes will be looking to open their season on the road against one of the favorites to win the 3A title. North Polk dropped a tough contest to Johnston on Friday night and they will be looking to avoid dropping to 0-2. This will be a big game for Dallas Center-Grimes if they want to make themselves known early in the season.
Tuesday: Mason City (1-0) vs. Waverly-Shell Rock (0-0) @ 6:15PM
Mason City got a tough win on Friday night but now they have to travel to Waverly Shell-Rock to take on a much tougher opponent. Another win for Mason City who allow them to prove themselves among the best teams in the state but a win for Waverly-Shell Rock will also be telling. This one could go either way but it’ll depend on how each team’s star players play.
Tuesday: Johnston (1-0) vs. Valley (0-0) @ 7:15PM
Johnston already took down one of the top 3A teams in the state and now they’ll look to start a very tough week with Valley. Johnston opened up with a convincing win and will need to play just as good against Valley to come out with the win. Valley has reloaded this year and does have weapons to score the ball still. A win for Valley would be a big boost to their confidence early in the season.
Tuesday: Des Moines Christian (1-0) vs. Grinnell (1-0) @ 7:45PM
Des Moines Christian escaped on Friday night against Creston while Grinnell scored 95 points in a win against North Mahaska. Des Moines Christian is going to have to protect the ball on Tuesday as Grinnell runs a variation of “The System”. In their win on Saturday, they made 21 3-pointers and if they can replicate that on Tuesday night it could be a very high scoring basketball game.
Tuesday: Ames (0-0) vs. Waukee (0-0) @ 7:45PM
Ames and Waukee start the season in what should be a great game to see where each of these teams sit early in the season. Waukee lost a ton of scoring from last year but they have one of the top 2021’s in the state. Ames’ top four players are likely better on paper than Waukee, but Waukee has a lot of depth this year. This will be a very good game to open the season for these two squads.
Saturday: West Hancock (0-0) vs. West Branch @ 3:30PM
On Saturday at Coe College we will see a large slate for “Rivalry Saturday”. One of the top games will be between two of the best teams in 2A as they meet early in the season. The Leerar-Koenig battle is going to be a very intense matchup to watch throughout the game. We are looking forward to this game to see how the top of 2A stacks up.
Saturday: Cedar Falls (0-0) vs. Johnston (1-0) @ 5:15PM
Fresh off their battle with Valley, Johnston will be facing off with Cedar Falls in a “Rivalry Saturday” game. Both of these teams have state tournament hopes this season and this game is really going to set the tone for both of these teams. Cedar Falls especially has an opportunity to knock off one of the top teams in the state early in the year and boost up the rankings. For Johnston, ending this win a win would be a nice cap to the start of their season.
Saturday: Xavier (0-0) vs. North Scott (0-0) @ 8:30PM
The very last game at Coe on Saturday pits two teams that have a few questions surrounding them. North Scott loses a ton of talent from last season but they do return two of their top players and should once again compete for a title. Xavier could use this game and grab a signature win very early in the season. This game will be a very good one with contrasting styles from the two teams.
