Lancaster brought a ton of athletes from up North that could actually play basketball, Yates was more impressive than the glimpse I caught a few weeks ago and it definitely takes a Village who just has an abundance of stars that can make things happen. I missed Bellaire and Wheatley completely due to time restraints, meaning I had something to do but I saw St Agnes at full strength, Shadow Creek has more weapons than R’Mani Taylor and Bre’Yon White and oh my, Heights continue to show that they’re the best team in HISD 6A. The event opened with Pro Vision battling Booker T Washington so let me just start this off with some of the unknown standouts from the event
Kemya ReeceKemya Reece- Booker T Washington-athletic sophomore guard that showed explosiveness in the open court as she attacked the basket from every angle. I love her upside, she can create her shot under pressure and the stop and pop was consistent from midrange
Chloe Figuero-Heights- sophomore guard that plays within herself and understands her role as she dives on the floor for loose balls and reacts well on defense, this includes taking charges. One of her biggest attributes is that she can actually shoot it, from mid to long-range but lets the game come to her
Karlie SampsonKarlie Sampson-Village School- junior guard is on a loaded squad yet she continues to elevate her game year after year. There’s no denying her effort, she gives it on both ends and she can get going on the offensive end and knock down shots from everywhere
Brooklin Brown-Shadow Creek-sophomore guard provided instant offense off the bench as she dropped three first-half three-pointers in a span of two minutes to ignite her team and the fans. Athletic and understands how to get to her spot and let it go
MeMe DunlapChinela Umeh-St Agnes-junior guard impressed me at the Texas A&M Team Camp and showed me I wasn’t seeing a mirage as she changes tempo and makes things happen. Her athletic ability enables her to bring the heat on defense as well as blow by defenders on offense
Meme Dunlap-Lancaster-senior guard showed she was heady in running the one and did a good job on a team full of athletic players. She makes the right passes, handles the ball under pressure and keeps her composure while being swarmed by the defense.
