Continue ReadingOctober 27th was our first Prep Girls Hoops Top 250 Expo in Iowa. It was the last of four this fall and we had an insane amount of talented players in the gym. Robert Kelly (PGH Kansas) and I will be breaking down all the talent at the event over the rest of this week or so. Up next is a look at Team 14 from the Expo.
Lily Hillebrand – 5’4 PG – 2023 – Ballard HS (IA)
Hillebrand is a young guard who can get up and down the floor. She played very good defense on the day and was solid in transition. Hillebrand has very good vision on the floor allowing her to run with the ball in her hands and either finish or dish it off at the other end. A very good young prospect.
Avery Hellig – 5’6 PG – 2022 – Bellevue East HS (NE)
Hellig is a young guard out of Nebraska and she came into the event and made some noise. She is a very good shooter and defender, but I thought that she passed it well at the event. Hellig has a very good motor and played hard the entire day. She makes up for her size with her basketball IQ.
Molly Lutmer – 5’6 PG – 2020 – Perry HS (IA)
Lutmer always plays with a good pace and at the Top 250 Expo, it was no different. She was scoring the ball well and was making almost everything she put up when I saw her. I love her ability to get to the rim off the bounce and she was doing that well at the Expo. Committed to Sioux Falls.
Claire Williams – 5’6 PG – 2022 – Omaha Central HS (NE)
Williams is as pure of a point guard as they come. She was all over the floor both on the offensive end and the defensive end racking up steals and buckets. She has great floor vision and decision making with the ball in her hands. Williams is a tough-nosed point guard who will be making waves for years to come.
Julia Bengtson – 5’8 G – 2021 – Becker HS (MN)
Bengtson is a very athletic guard who is very good as a slasher. She is a bouncy guard capable of playing off the ball or with the ball in her hands. I really liked her ability to get up and down the floor in transition. Bengtson is one of those players who you need to keep an eye on all day long because she can hurt you in so many different ways.
Vanessa Bickford – 5’8 G – 2024 – Dallas Center-Grimes HS (IA)
Bickford is a very physically strong guard who had a great showing at the Top 250. She was one of the top scorers in the event as she continually beat her man off the dribble and got to the rim. I thought that she showed a ton of poise with the ball in her hands and was able to make plays happen all day long.
Katie Keeney – 5’9 F – 2023 – Carlisle HS (IA)
Carlisle is going to need some players to step up this year if they look to make a push towards the state tournament and Keeney will be able to help them with that. She is a very versatile player who can play both on the inside and along the perimeter. She played well at the Expo and I expect big things from her going forward.
Kayla Preston – 5’10 PF – 2023 – Millard North HS (NE)
Preston was a very impressive post presence and she also holds the ability to play around the perimeter with her athleticism. Preston showed really nice footwork at the event and continually put pressure on the defense. I think that she is going to have a very nice high school career. She was one of the best young post players at the event.
Jenna Hopp – 5’11 G – 2023 – Glenwood HS (IA)
Hopp is one of the top freshmen in the state and she quickly showed why as she went up against some of the top upperclassmen in the event. She is a steady shooter, handles it well, and can also get to the rim on command. Hopp has gotten more athletic since this past summer and is going to be a pain for the next four years.
Delaynie Luneckas – 6’2 PF – 2022 – West Branch HS (IA)
Luneckas is a developing player who is starting to become more of a threat on the inside with her skill. She is a very good defender who is adept at swatting shot attempts back with ease. As she gains strength, she is just going to be an even bigger threat on both ends of the floor. She played very well at the Top 250.
