IHSAA scrimmage rules permitted both teams to play four twelve-minute quarters with the score resetting after each. Northwestern won all four quarters by a significant amount.
Northwestern
Northwestern picked up right where they left off last season, where they won their second straight 3A state championship. They dominated every aspect of the scrimmage winning by almost twenty points in each quarter. Northwestern’s full-court defense was too much for Logan to handle and they managed to force a ton of turnovers leading to scores.
Madison Layden – 2020 – W Purdue Commit
Layden once again proved why she is one of the state’s top players. She was lights out from three, at one point hitting three in a row in three straight possessions. Her ability to score at will from all three levels at her size made her a matchup nightmare for her defender.
Kendall Bostic – 2020 – F Michigan State Commit
Few players can dominate the paint the way Bostic can. She showed an array of post moves and had a ton of runs leading to finishes at the rim. Bostic’s ability to step out and score from all three levels sets her apart from her competition.
McKenna Layden – 2023 – F
This was Layden’s first time seeing varsity action and she played well above her age. She scored when given the opportunity and showed her high IQ with her off-ball movement and passing. Defensively she used her length to force several turnovers and disrupt her opponent’s shots.
Klair Merrell – 2020 – G
Merrell did a little bit of everything. She knocked down shots from all three levels and made several nice cuts leading to finishes at the rim. Her ability to play multiple spots on the floor with her skill set made her a tough matchup for her defender.
Logansport:
Logansport was without their senior scoring standout Elle Deardorff who was out due to injury. With Deardroff out of the lineup Logansport played several underclassmen significant minutes. Despite being overwhelmed by the much larger Northwestern lineup, Logansport had several flashes of potential. As the underclassmen start to play more minutes and Deardorff returns Logansport has a chance to have a solid season.
Gabby Richey – 2023 – PG
Richey’s speed caught my eye quickly. She has the ability to fly down the court and finish in transition. Defensively Richey played extremely tough and gave it all she had against the older and more experienced Northwestern backcourt. Her talent really stood out and she has the potential for a big freshman season.
Emilee Cripe – 2020 – F
Cripe was a bright spot on the Logansport offense. She has a nice touch around the rim and good footwork in the paint. Defensively Cripe spent the night guarding the tough Northwestern front line and she was very alert and aggressive forcing several stops.
Erica White – 2021 – G
White’s ability to run in transition caught my attention quickly. She found ways to score from all three levels and made good decisions with the ball throughout the scrimmage. Defensively White was very active getting several steals and forcing turnovers.
