This will be done in no particular order, but I found it appropriate to start in the Metro League with some real fire power right off the bat. The Garfield Bulldogs and Eastside Catholic Crusaders are both going to be very talented this season, but the one major difference will be veteran leadership versus youthful talent.

What’s on the line: Potential Metro League regular season title
Garfield and Eastside Catholic will only play one time in league play, so this game could have major implications for the regular season title. They will be able to square off again in league playoffs, and districts, but this first game will be highly anticipated.
Garfield’s two stars:
Garfield will return reigning Metro League MVP and California commit, Dalayah Daniels. At 6’4, she will cause major problems for just about anyone around the state and she will be able to lock down whoever it is that she is guarding. West Seattle transfer Meghan Fiso will have some ball handling and perimeter scoring responsibilities at 5’10. The Michigan commit has a nice midrange jumper and plays the game at her own pace. Garfield has some other solid pieces and transfers to be announced, but it will ultimately come down to how their stars do in the biggest moments. Both have major state tourney experience and Dalayah has played in a 3a state title game.
Eastside Catholic’s crew of young talent:
We have yet to release our initial 2023 watchlist, but one thing that is for certain is the Crusaders will have multiple players represented. Multiple Division 1 recruits will suit up this season including 5’9 Mjralce Sheppard, 5’5 Malia Samuels, 6’1 Imbie Jones and multiple others. Another one to keep an eye out for is 5’10 Kentlake transfer Zahirah Walton of the 2022 class. A smooth athlete with natural ability on both sides of the ball, “ZaZa” is another D1 prospect the Crusaders will be equipped with. The big question for Eastside Catholic will be how they do in the bright lights with zero players that have ever played meaningful high school basketball games or been in the state tournament.
Twitter Poll:
71% voted that Garfield will win metro this year, while just 29% voted Eastside Catholic to win. I have asked around and at least for now, many feel like this is Garfield’s league title for the taking and Eastside Catholic will have to wait its turn. With this much anticipation before the season has even started, it will be something to see on January 31st!
