It is now time for the IH to give you all, his sports fan-atics the REAL DEAL on this past weekend’s Artie Turner shootout at Paul VI. Individual player-wise:the top 18 players, the top five teams, and the concessions review (one HAS to do a write up of the stadium chow, as well as the gourmet hospitality grub for the college coaches and for such esteemed dignitaries as you all’s main man the IH). As well, the IH’s shootout MVP, and All-Shootout Team!
The five player All-Shootout Team, from outside AND inside the DMV
alphabetical order:
Ryanne Allen, Raven Johnson, Jaelyn Talley, Delaney Thomas, Brianna Turnage.
Shootout MVP – Raven Johnson – Westlake (GA)
Her performance bringing her team back from a 20-point deficit to PVI in the middle of the 3rd-quarter to lose by only 9 because Westlake ran out of time was a classic!
Top five teams of the shootout, and why.
In alphabetical order:
Thomas Edison (VA), this might be the most athletic team they’ve had over there since the Chasity Clayton (rim rocking and rim riding days), many athletes with skill and discipline, an All-Nova-level PG to keep everything running properly, and a more than capable coaching staff with OG head coach Dianne Lewis and a ringer in assistant coach Jim Lewis (of George Mason and Washington Mystics fame), this should be the year that they beat Princess Anne for the State Championship.
Georgetown Visitation (MD), still a nice collection of 3-point shooters, but now several athletes, 5-11 to 6-1 players, and players who can play multiple position from PG to C, and always great coaching, will they always be in the mood to play and to dominate?
Paul VI (VA), the best showing of any team in the shootout, in a certain world could end up as #1 in The Washington Post end of season rankings, always great shooters, great team defense this time around, young but passionate about the game, steady and patient on offense, calm and informed coaching, a good mix of steadiness-at-the-wheel and smooth thuggery, a point-guard that who might be the best coach on the floor of any team in the DMV.
St. John’s College (DC), an always probing coaching staff, several girls who can score, any one whom could be leading scorer in a game, no team drama, three All-WCAC First Team candidates, their usual complement of 3-point snipers and outstanding free-throw shooters, eventually Azzi Fudd will be back!
Westlake (GA), as the IH said previously, no way does he think they are the #1 team in the country, but he understands the argument (especially the way they came back from 20 behind on PVI and almost caught them but ran out of time), a steady diet of the DMV’s top ten would drop them like a brick at the bottom on the Potomac River, however, they DO have two studettes in Raven Johnson and Brianna Turnage, and about 4/5 other playmakers, and a no fold-up-like-paper attitude when the cash is on the table, and a coaching staff who doesn’t panic in stressful situations.
There you have it, fellow prognosticators. What do you all think? And now, the chow. Concessions for the civilians: typical stadium grub, and a lot of it, nothing to get all broken up about. On the other hand, the gourmet vittles for the college coaches and the local/regional/national dignitaries such as the IH was magnifique! Several salad options, and other veggie delicacies. Breakfast sandwich options. Cold-cut sandwich options. Lots of hot pizza. Christmas cookies and several different tarts. And the clincher—Chic-fil-A chicken sandwiches, and they were GOOD! To wash it all down, coffee, soda, and water. A great spread from the event host, PVI head coach Scott Allen. While you all are at it, loyal and inquisitive sports fans, watch out for Pallotti the team, Visitation sophomore 6′0″ Nailah McBeth, and SJC freshman 5’10” Jade Tillman.
The IH’s top five outside-of-the DMV players:
In alphabetical order:
Ryanne Allen 6’1″ – Sophomore – Archbishop Wood (PA)
a great SG/SF/PF for high school and SP for high mid-major D-1, can score inside and out to 3-point range, nice quicks, knows the court very well, with her skills, athletic ability, and stamina, she should have averaged 25 points/10 rebounds/5 assists per game.
Paris Clark – 5’10 – Sophomore – Long Island Lutheran (NY)
energizer bunny, tremendous array of shots when attacking the basket, quick and range on defense, lots of steals and deflections, okay handles and a competent enough outside shooter.
Julia Iorio – 5’7″ – Senior – Ossining (NY)
outstanding catch-and-shoot game, great 3-point shooting and mid-range games, looks like she can be an adequate-enough defender against high school PG’s.
Raven Johnson – 5’8″ – Junior – Westlake (GA)
high IQ and a great passer with vision, stellar mid-range game, makes 3-pointers in pressure moments, awesome facilitator with patience, very active hands in the passing lanes on defense, seems laid back in demeanor but clutch when the cash is on the table.
Brianna Turnage – 6’2″ – Junior – Westlake (GA)
A superior athlete at this level, long, wiry, and agile, nice bounce attacking the basket, long and effective on defense, not bad handles (but needs to be much better with her kind of potential)a soft 3-point shooting touch, should be able to end up top-30/40 in her class nationally.
