Paul VI came into the game as a heavy underdog against the #1 ranked team in the country the Westlake Bulldogs out of Georgia. Westlake had their way on day one of the Art Turner Memorial Classic defeating defending WCAC champions St. John’s by double digits. On day two they ran into trouble trying to keep up with Paul VI’s fast moving offense. The Panthers started off hot taking an 19-0 lead of the break and never looked back despite Westlake’s repeated attempts to make a run. In the end PVI had two many players that can hit shots anywhere on the floor for Westlake to defend and the Panthers rolled to a 67-58 victory.
Six Reasons Paul VI Won:
Lee Volker – 6’0″ – Guard – 2020
Lee VolkerLee has enough size and athleticism to be effective at multiple positions. She has been a solid piece of the Panther’s puzzle for years and now is one of the leaders. She has excellent range and vision on the court and plays within the system.
Jaelyn Talley – 6’0″ – Forward – 2022
Jaelyn TalleyWe have seen Jaelyn put up good numbers when needed while also being content in her role if the team wins. She plays well in the high post on offense and plays above average post defense against taller players. She is a good finisher by the rim and has the ability to step out beyond the arc where she can take advantage of true post players with her range.
Scott Allen – 6’0″ – Head Coach – Paul VI
Scott AllenI’ve never profiled a coach in a review but, credit is due to Coach Scott Allen. Allen has created a buy-in atmosphere that players have brought into over the years. He has coached mixtures of All-Americans and journeymen under his regime while turning an obscure program into a national powerhouse under his decade long tenure. Coach Allen makes the game easy finding ways to create open looks for his players. It is evident that there is an emphasis on skill development in his program as most of his players regardless of position are able to create and knock down open shots beyond the arc.
Alyssa Costigan – 6’0″ – Guard – 2022
Alyssa CostiganAlyssa has been playing at a high school level since entering the eighth grade. She has a knack of playing well in clutch and pressure situations. She is comfortable in her role with the team and I can see it increasing as time goes on. She can score inside and is a comfortable three point shooter as six feet tall..
Faith Alston – 5’9′ – Guard – 2020
Faith AlstonFaith gained some valuable experience playing under All-American Ashley Owusu. Owusu’s mid-season injury last year allowed Alston to showcase her skill as she had multiple 20 point plus games. Now as the starting point guard she is showing her ability to be the coach on the floor while continuing to score in a variety of ways. Perhaps there is a future for her on the sidelines once her playing career ends.
Taylor Cotter – 5’9″ – Guard – 2020
Taylor CotterTaylor scored 9 points in the game and each bucket was bigger than the previous. She put a stop to Westlake’s run with a big three pointer and some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. She showed to be more than capable to step in at any point when needed in big games.
