But, things did not quite go as some may have anticipated on day two of the Fitz Tourney in Spokane, WA. The game was close throughout most of the first half. The tides changed quickly in the third quarter when Beaverton blew their lead up to the 18. From that point on, they never really looked back, winning 70-47.
Beaverton REALLY executes
It is easy to see how Beaverton has such a strong team. They know each other’s games and they know what to expect from their coach. A large portion of the girls have been playing together year round for years, with the Clutch Players program out of Oregon. They have a variety of sets and play calls that the players seem to know like the back of their own hand. It all starts with point guard Mary Kay Naro (Boise State signee) who is super unselfish and ensures everyone is in their correct positions on the floor.
U-High’s Tyler McCliment-Call was a tough matchup for Beaverton
The Portland signee consistently beat her man off the bounce. She got to the paint at will and hit shots from the outside as well. She forced Beaverton’s Mary Kay Naro into multiple foul calls by attacking aggressively. She would end up finishing with 24 points.
The Erikstrup sisters are a tough handle
At 6’2 and 6’1, Laura and Sydney Erikstrup are skilled, strong and the ultimate team players. Laura (USD signee) played particularly well, scoring inside and crashing the offensive boards. Sydney (ASU signee) did a little bit of everything for the Beavers. They know where to find each other and where they each like the ball on the floor. Both are also capable of defending multiple positions on the floor. They finished a combined 34 points and controlled the glass on both ends.
Beaverton has other players outside of their big three
2021 6’0 W Alexa Borter can really shoot it! She needs to work on finishing inside some, but she is a 6 foot shooter that knows how to play without the ball in her hands. She finished with 13. 2023 6’0 W Lainey Spears is a player to know moving forward. She moves her feet really well laterally and she has some inside-out presence to her. Spears projects as a 3 in college. She has great length and potential. The rest of the roster all plays a role as well, despite not carrying much of the scoring load! Definite contenders for the 6a state title again in Oregon.
