Several of last year’s top producers have picked up where they left off and plenty of up-and-comers are quickly making names for themselves on the state leaderboards.
Let’s take a look at some of the players who have been dishing out dimes with regularity through the early portion of the 2019-20 campaign.
The Top Five
Emily Jelden, 2020, 5-4, PG, Holyoke
Jelden takes the term pass-first point guard to a new level. So far in 2019-20, according to MaxPreps, Jelden has 12 more assists (27) than she does points (15) through three games. That’s a pretty selfless stat profile, and potentially one of the main reasons Holyoke is off to a 3-0 start. Jelden has finished with 10 assists in two of the Dragons’ first three games, and is also averaging 3.3 steals a night.
Jana Van Gytenbeek
Jana Van Gytenbeek, 2020, 5-7, PG, Cherry Creek
* Stanford University commit
Boy, does Van Gytenbeek continue to impress. She’s a point guard who could average 30 points a night but has found a way to dish out seven assists a game, and that’s while playing three of five games against some of the nation’s top talent at the She Got Game Classic in Texas. With the Stanford-bound Van Gytenbeek at the one, the Bruins are in good hands as the continue on their Class 5A title defense this winter.
Catherine Lacey, 2020, Heritage Christian
Along with teammate Kali Siemers (2022), Lacey gives the Eagles a pair of guards who keep the ball hopping and have set up their teammates nicely along the way to a 3-0 start to the 2019-20 season. Through those three games, Lacey has averaged 6.7 assists and has turned the ball over seven times, according to MaxPreps.
Not a player who focuses on scoring, Lacey has attempted only seven shots per game this winter. She does, however, average 5.3 steals and two rebounds.
Monique Delatorre, 2021, 5-9, G, Thornton
Delatorre had a breakout campaign as a sophomore last winter and showed herself to be an all-around ball player. Through the first three games of her junior campaign that have been reported on MaxPreps, Delatorre was scoring nearly double her average from last season at 24.7 points per game for the Trojans (5-1).
Throwing up a similarly versatile state line to last season’s, Delatorre was also averaging 6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 5.7 steals while shooting 58 percent (34 for 59) from the field through three games. She attempted just seven 3-pointers through three games.
Shamahra Henderson
Shamahra Henderson, 2020, 5-9, G, Thornton
Henderson has long been known for her scoring ability and all-around athleticism, and she averaged a double-double as a junior last season. So far this winter, it appears little has changed for the dynamic guard as she is averaging 22.3 points, 12 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 6 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.
Henderson, who has a high ceiling and could be a Division-II type of player, was last reported to be leaning towards a JUCO school and was hoping to make a decision by the holiday break. She is, however, still weighing all her options as she plays through her senior season.
