Several of last year’s top producers have picked up where they left off and plenty of up-and-comers are quickly making names for themselves on the state leaderboards.
Let’s take a look at some of the players who have been scoring in bunches through the early portion of the 2019-20 campaign.
The Top Five
Isabelle MunsonIsabelle “Izzy” Munson, 2020, 5-9, G, Fairview
* Emory University commit
Leading the state in scoring average, Isabelle Munson has been absolutely lighting it up through the first four games of her senior season. The all-around catalyst for the Knights (2-3), Munson is averaging 25.5 points a game while shooting 62 percent (39 for 63) from the field and 54 percent (7 for 13) from 3-point range. The Knights senior has scored 25 or more points in three of four games, including a 34-point outburst against Far Northeast on Dec. 5 in which she shot 14 of 18 from the field.
On top of her scoring, Munson, who averaged 14.6 points as a junior, is also averaging 4.3 rebounds, 5.3 steals and 2.5 assists. If Munson keeps this up, or sustains anything close to it, the Knights will certainly have a go-to scorer to build around with players like sophomore Kailey Page (9.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.0 bpg) emerging as impact starters.
Emily Sanchez, 2022, 5-0, G, Sheridan
An up-and-comer whose big step forward has been a welcome improvement for the Rams (2-2) this winter, Sanchez has been letting it fly early and often in ’19-20. Averaging nearly 20 shot attempts a night, Sanchez is scoring 25 points per game and is doing much of her damage from behind the 3-point arc, where she is currently shooting a higher percentage than she is from the field overall.
From 3-point range, Sanchez is shooting 41 percent (16 for 39) and has hit a half dozen long balls in two of three games. The undersized guard’s season high so far is 31 points in a 62-39 win over Lincoln on Dec. 10.
Monique Delatorre, 2021, 5-9, G, Thornton
Delatorre had a breakout campaign as a sophomore last winter and showed herself to be an all-around ball player. Through the first three games of her junior campaign that have been reported on MaxPreps, Delatorre was scoring nearly double her average from last season at 24.7 points per game for the Trojans (5-1).
Throwing up a similarly versatile state line to last season’s, Delatorre was also averaging 6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 5.7 steals while shooting 58 percent (34 for 59) from the field. She attempted just seven 3-pointers through three games.
Shamahra Henderson
Shamahra Henderson, 2020, 5-9, G, Thornton
Henderson has long been known for her scoring ability and all-around athleticism, and she averaged a double-double as a junior last season. So far this winter, it appears little has changed for the dynamic guard as she is averaging 22.3 points, 12 rebounds, 6.3 assists, six steals and 2.3 blocks per game.
Henderson, who has a high ceiling and could be a Division-II type of player, was last reported to be leaning towards a JUCO school and was hoping to make a decision by the holiday break. She is, however, still weighing all her options as she plays through her senior season.
Timiya Guevara, 2021, 5-3, G, Denver South
During a 80-31 victory over Smoky Hill on Dec. 12, Guevara surpassed the 1,000-point threshold for her career. That’s an impressive benchmark for any prep player to reach, and Guevara was able to hit it just five games into her junior season. Also in that game, Denver South’s scoring guard also poured in 30 points for the sixth time in her prep career.
Through six games, Guevara is scoring 22 points per game primarily by slashing her way to the basket, but that’s not all. The do-it-all Rebels standout has also been good for 7.3 rebounds despite standing at just 5-foot-3, 4.7 assists and six steals a night. Guevara just continues to put up eye-popping numbers and it will be fascinating to follow the career totals she amasses considering how much time she still has left in high school.
