Mullen had no problem getting it going against Cherokee Trail. The lady Mustangs worked the ball inside-out with their dominant post present, and players that can be ready to knock down a open shot. Megan Pohs scored 10 points, 2-5 behind the arc, 2 steals. Elaina Martinez with 6 points, all coming from behind the arc. These two guards are great floor generals, and loves to get their teammates involved. Pohs and Martinez did not have a big scoring night but does not mean that can’t score whenever they want. It was just time for the post-wing players to get it going on the offensive end.
Gracie Gallegos was the standout player of the game scoring at will. She led the team in scoring with 15 points, 6-12 from the field, 2-4 from behind the arc, 7 rebounds. Gallegos did extremely well attacking the rim and finishing with ease. She also was ready to shoot the ball when she needed knocking down two open shots behind the arc. Gallegos stands at 6’0″ making it difficult for teams to score the ball because of her length and size.
Imani Perez being a handful inside of the paint with her dominant present. Scoring only 8 points but extremely efficient around the rim. She shot at 80 percent with 4-5 from two point field goal, Perez snatched 10 rebounds putting her team in a great position to win.
Kilah Freelon a sophomore who swings up varsity came into the game and did her job. Standing at 5’11” she is extremely athletic, long, and shows great foot speed. With limited minutes due to a stack roster, she came in and scored 4 points for the lady Mustangs. The ceiling is high for Freelon, it will be great to see how she do this season.
Despite everyone not scoring as much for Mullen, It was a night for Gallegos as she dominated the entire game. Any one of the Mustangs player can get going. Saturday championship game it was Gracie Gallegos, who is next for the lady Mustang?
Dominique Rodriquez only player on Cherokee Trail to score in the double figure against Mullen on Saturday. She did a great job getting to the rim and drawing some fouls. Rodriquez tried to put the team on her back with her scoring and her competitive edge. Rodriquez is a crafty player that can shoot, and slash to the hoop with variety of moves around the rim. This will be her break out year as she is still yet to sign, and could play at the next level.
