The game was close throughout with both teams going on runs and exchanging leads. It ended up going into overtime, and Redondo was able to pull off the win in the end. Here’s a couple of takeaways from the game for both teams.
1. Flintridge Prep passing/playmaking
Flintridge Prep has two of the top playmaking guards in the Southern California area with Princeton-bound Kaitlyn Chen and freshman Ashley Chea. Both play well off each other and can play alongside each other in a two point guard lineup. Chea in particular is a crafty passer who can see plays before they happen. Chen is a lethal scorer, and she uses the defensive pressure she draws to find open teammates.
2. Redondo Union’s interior play
The Seahawks have one player in particular that can create havoc for opposing teams in the paint. That player is junior Calli Stokes. She’s a very versatile player who can handle the ball and play on the wing, but she can certainly take advantage of smaller defenders and operate in the post. She has good footwork in the post and can finish strong at the rim. Solid rebounder and good motor.
3. Flintridge outside shooting
With quality playmakers like Chen and Chea, good outside shooting to space the floor is a necessity. Fortunately for Flintridge, they have plenty of that. They have a couple of players who know their role and do well spotting up from the three-point line. Those players are Sophia Gonzalez, Andie Kim, and Ashlyn Zhang. Each player is capable of knocking down threes with consistency, and Gonzalez has hit some big shots already this season.
4. Redondo’s wing/guard play
Redondo may have a reliable inside threat in Stokes, but they have strong play on the wings as well starting with Academy of the Art University commit Alyssa Munn. Munn is a tough floor leader who is a fearless scorer and good playmaker. They also have Santa Clara-bound Anna Johnson. Johnson is solid in the halfcourt looking for cutters and hitting rollers in the pick and roll. She can run the floor well in transition and she shoots well from three.
