The third quarterfinal featured rivals Millard West and Omaha Westside. Westside, the 3rd seed in the tournament, led throughout a choppy first half and held a convincing thirteen point lead early in the fourth quarter, but a barrage of 3’s by the Wildcats brought them to within four, while also having the ball. Westside got the necessary stops and hit a couple of free throws late to give them a 50-44 win and a birth in Thursday’s semi-final.
Adriana DiPrima (5’6″ Sophomore, Omaha Westside): DiPrima has a very nice, left-handed stroke from the three point line and is a physically strong perimeter player. She is a good decision maker and doesn’t try to force anything within the Warriors motion based backdoor offense. Over the next couple of years, DiPrima needs to work on her explosiveness and athleticism to fill in for the eventual graduation of all-stater Ella Wedergren.
Madilyn Siebler (5’9″ Sophomore, Omaha Westside): A long, lanky guard who can be disruptive defensively, Siebler comes off the bench to give Westside a lift. Siebler has a nice looking shot, and I believe that with the graduation of Wedergren and Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor, she will be asked to shoulder more of the load offensively. She’s got a great build for a perimeter player and has a nice upside to her.
Kaitlyn Hanna (5’5″ Sophomore, Omaha Westside): Hanna is similar to DiPrima, except she’s a righty and not a lefty. Again, very disciplined with great shot selection, she does have a good looking perimeter shot and shoots it in rhythm. A smart player, Coach Steve Clark trusted Hanna down the stretch to close the game Westside’s established four senior starters; to me, that is a great sign of a player’s value to a team and what the coaching staff thinks of a player. Hanna has a chance to be a nice player for the Warriors.
Laney Schipper (5’9″ Junior, MIllard West): Schipper is an undersized post who does a decent job defending with her footwork both around the block and just outside the scoring zone. Offensively, most of her work will be done with rim running and on the offensive glass, and she needs to work on her face up game and getting bigger post players in space to beat them off the dribble. A very hard worker, Schipper could develop into a nice post player for the Wildcats.
Emmy Holl (5’7″ Sophomore, Millard West): Holl started out this contest coming off the bench, but played big minutes in the Wildcats frantic comeback attempt. A scrappy defender who is a great athlete and can play forever without a break, Holl is still developing her offensive game for the varsity level. She will need to improve her perimeter playmaking skills in order to be as effective of offensive guard as the Wildcats look to improve their depth as the season progresses.
