Meta Sapien & Kimberly Fuentez
Duchesne’s supporting cast
Van Pelt is the glue, no question about that but steady play from 2021 guard Aleyna Ozcelik played a big part in their win. The team ran the press efficiently and that provided several baskets going the other way however they also had a couple of players that showed they could shoot it from long range, 2020 guard Meta Sapien as well as Vivian Vann, also a 2020 guard. Throw in some solid inside play from senior Marissa Lundvall who finished and rebounded
Cristo Rey’s effort
The team started the game off with only 5 players and put up a good fight before Duchesne put together several big runs but this squad never gave up. 2020 Daisy Garcia plays bigger than she is, and doesn’t mind battling against taller players but despite being down, I enjoyed seeing them play through it. 2023 Ximena Escobedo,2020 Aracely Lopez, and 2021 Isabella Gillette were serviceable players but seniors Bianca Carrizal and Kimberly Fuentez provided most of the firepower. Carrizal just goes hard, attacks, and plays the passing lane and she found ways to score while Fuentez used her body well for baskets and did a good job rebounding
Eliza Holt
St John’s vs Kinkaid
Due to time restraints, I had to leave this game early but St Johns was putting up a great fight fueled by the play of senior Emily Holt. Holt sees the floor, understands the game, and just made plays but her length and ability to shoot the midrange consistently caught my eye. Kinkaid got off to a slow start offensively, Olivia Sullivan kept them in striking distance dropping multiple shots from long range however despite a great comeback, the team lost in overtime
The Village School defeated St John’s in the championship game and I’ll come back and drop some of the top performers from the event including UNSIGNED and UNDER THE RADAR players that continue to show they can play at some level of the next level
