Several players shined this week at the Huhtamki Classic hosted by DeSoto High School. The tournament featured Olathe Northwest, DeSoto, Shawnee Mission West, Olathe North, Truman, Gardner-Edgerton, Blue Valley Southwest and Mill Valley on the Kansas side, and Truman on the Missouri side.
Here, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at several guards who impressed.
5 — Abby Augustine, 5’8, G, 2022, Blue Valley Southwest
Augustine is a smart, heady point guard who looks to set up others and run the Timberwolves’ offense. A left hander, Augustine can knock down open 3-pointers, carve out a path to the basket off the bounce and has a lot of range. She is also a tough defensive player who competes at both ends of the floor and works hard to wall off opposing ball handlers.
22 — Sania Copeland, 5’8, G, 2022, Olathe North
Copeland plays a lot bigger than her 5’8 listed height would suggest. She rebounds, gets in the passing lanes defensively and can score from all three levels at the offensive end. A left hander, Copeland handles it well, can create her own shot and gets all the way to the basket where she is a creative finisher. Copeland impressed throughout the tournament in DeSoto, showcasing an all-around skill set.
24 — Deon Monroe, 5’7, G, 2020, Truman
A strong, physical guard, Monroe is a unique player who uses her strength to her advantage. She has a quick first step and can carve out a path to the bucket against the best defenses. While Monroe doesn’t shoot a lot from the outside, she makes free throws and gets to the line often.
10 — Mary Reiber, 5’4, PG, 2020, Olathe Northwest
Reiber is a strong all-around point guard who plays bigger than her listed 5’4 height would suggest. She was a key member of the Ravens team that advanced all the way to the Kansas 6A state championships last season and brings experience and a high basketball IQ to the floor. Reiber put together a strong tournament in DeSoto, showing the ability to lead a team and play tough defense.
21 — Tyrians Standford, 5’9, G, 2023, Olathe North
A talented freshman, Standford is an athletic guard who can impact the game in a variety of ways. She is a strong ball handler, creative playmaker and can get in the lane and finish tough chances. Stanford is still finding her way with the North varsity but is already making an impact for the Eagles.
