Several players shined this week at the Huhtamki Classic hosted by DeSoto High School. The tournament featured Olathe Northwest, DeSoto, Shawnee Mission West, Olathe North, Truman, Gardner-Edgerton, Blue Valley Southwest and Mill Valley on the Kansas side, and Truman on the Missouri side.
Here, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at several players who are flying under the radar.
21 — Sydney Beck, 5’11, F, 2021, Blue Valley Southwest
Good defensive player, brings versatility and well rounded skill set to the floor. Beck is also a standout soccer Keeper and brings that defensive intensity to the hardwood as well. She moves her feet well for a tall wing player and can lock up guards or interior players. At the offensive end of the court, Beck finishes well around the basket and can knock down outside shots.
21 — Cecelia Moore, 5’11, F, 2023, Truman
Moore more than holds her own in the paint for a freshman, working hard at the defensive end of the court and battling bigger, older players in the paint. She rebounds well and has a good feel for the game. Moore has a soft touch around the basket, can play at the high post and makes smart, on time passes too teammates.
Olivia Morris, 5’4, G, 2021, Shawnee Mission West
Morris is a smart, heady player who works hard at both ends of the floor. She can handle the ball a little, make smart passes and is a tough defensive player. Morris is also a knock down shooter when left alone from behind the arc. Morris
10 — LaMyah Ricks, 5’5, G, 2020, DeSoto
Also a track and cross country standout, Ricks is an exceptionally quick player with a burst to the basket off the dribble. She can finish around the basket and score over bigger, taller players in the lane. A solid point guard who handles the ball well, Ricks can also make plays at the defensive end of the court where she uses her quickness to pick up easy steals.
22 — Katherine Weigel, 5’7, G, 2021, Mill Valley
Weigel is a smart, heady point guard who brings a high basketball IQ and a good feel for the game to the floor. She can knock down an open shot, handles the ball well and looks to make the easy pass. Weigel plays an unselfish brand of basketball, looking to get her teammates involved in the game and works hard to set up others.
