Lilly Stoddard takes the game over
Jessica Carrothers is normally tasked with most of the offensive workload, but she was able to scale it back only scoring 8 points for the entire game. The player that stepped up for the Bulldogs in a big way was Lilly Stoddard, who scored a career high 20 points and added 15 boards as well. Crown Point went into a little bit of a scoring drought, allowing Penn to cut the 20 point lead down to 7. The other contributor for the team was, Dash Shaw who added 10 points.
Crown Point relies on it’s defense for the win
The bulldogs offense didn’t stand out during the game, especially since they went 9:21 without a field goal from midway through the third to midway through the fourth. Even though the lead got smaller and smaller, Crown Point was able to buckle down on defense in the fourth quarter to come out victorious. The bulldogs only scored seven points in the fourth, but were able to hold Penn to only eight. The thing that really hurt Penn was shooting the basketball, they shot just 12.5% from three and 5-12 from the free-throw line.
Santiago injury
Alyna Santiago is out right now because of a torn ACL injury, which is a tough loss for the Bulldogs. It will hurt the team’s depth and will challenge others to step up in her absence. This made Stoddard’s performance even more important on Friday. Her ability to score the ball will be a key factor going forward for the rest of the season. The great effort and production on the defensive end of the floor has allowed the Bulldogs to continue it’s winning ways.
Penn’s outlook going forward
Penn is usually on the other side of making teams suffocate on defense, as they allow just 31.9 points per game. However, Penn ran into a Crown Point defense that is just as good if not better. Trinity Clinton and Reganne Pate average almost 30 points a contest and were held to only 11 combined points. Caroline Morris scored a career- high 13 points. Both of these teams lean their hat on the defensive end of the floor and it showed. Either one can make a team go through a brief scoring drought during the game and has offensive weapons to go along with it. With this loss for Penn, it ends a really impressive 51- game regular season winning streak. The streak was nice, but Penn is still playing for something bigger and that is a IHSSA title.
