I was able to see a couple of the championship games including Dominguez vs. Bassett, La Jolla Country Day vs. Rosary Academy, and Flintridge Prep vs Eastvale Roosevelt.
Here’s a few of the top standouts that I saw from those three games.
1. Leigha Harris – Dominguez 2020
Harris is a solid, versatile guard who has had a few Division 1 schools keep her on their radar. She can play both guard and forward and even some center in small ball lineups. She is a good ball-handler who is able to run the offense and push the ball in transition. She can be a playmaker and she often gets her teammates good shot opportunities. She’s a good rebounder and solid wing defender.
2. Te-Hina Paopao – La Jolla Country Day 2020
Paopao has a complete floor game for a point guard. In the Torreys offense, she plays alongside Jazzy Anousinh so she plays a little off ball, but she can most assuredly run the point. She’s a great scorer who has a solid pull-up jumper. She can create her own shot on the perimeter and can make a move in one to two dribbles. Good outside shooter and she can get to the rim. Takes challenge of guarding opposing team’s top scorers.
3. Ashley Chea – Flintridge Prep 2023
Chea is a freshman guard who looks like she’s going to be a prospect to watch out for. Her talent and skill are readily apparent. One aspect she could work on is slowing down a bit in terms of decision making. Otherwise, she’s an absolute blur on the fast break and looks to power her way to the rim full steam ahead. She’s a good playmaker too who makes some really nice passes.
4. Kaitlyn Chen – Flintridge Prep 2020
A Princeton commit, Chen is everything you want in a point guard. She makes the right decisions whether it’s looking to score or looking to get her teammates involved. She runs the offense well and has solid court awareness. Scoring wise, she has a nice off the dribble game, can get to the rim, and either finish or draw contact. Solid defender, and she’s not afraid to dive on the floor for loose balls.
5. Michelle Onyiah – Roosevelt 2020
A Cal commit, Onyiah is in the mold of a stretch big who spaces the floor with her shooting but can also play in the paint. In fact, her strength is playing around the rim and cleaning up missed shots. She’s a handful in the post and very tough to keep off the glass. It’s almost an automatic two points if she catches the ball in the vicinity of the rim. Very versatile defensively; can anchor the middle as a shot blocker or switch out on guards.
