Bishop McNamara took out Hamilton Heights a year ago today when they stood as the nation’s top team. In the rematch the Hawks were out for revenge. The Hawks led 9-8 and never looked back and went into the half with a 27-23 lead. In the second half the Hawks use their huge size advantage inside to take a 46-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs went to the bench trying a variety of combinations even bringing in a couple of their freshmen for help. In the end it was all Hamilton Heights walking away with a 58-45 victory.
Standout Players:
Aliyah Pitts – 5’11” – Wing – Bishop McNamara
Aaliyah PittsAliyah was the brightest spot for the Mustangs and at times was the best player on the court for either team. She made plays both inside and out. She finished with a team high 18 points as the Woodbridge transfer showed why she was the Virginia Player of the Year last season. Pitts will play a huge part in the Mustangs success this season as the new star on the team.
Kamilla Cardoza – 6’7″ – Post – Hamilton Heights
Kamilla CardozaThe Mustangs had no answer for Kamilla Cardoza, quite honestly not many teams in the nation have an answer for the size an skill that she possess. Cardoza ran the floor and finished at the rim. She showed soft hands to receive the entry pass and turn with a soft touch. On one play she was quadruple teamed and still received the pass and scored. She finished with a game high 22 points and shot 100% from the field.
Taylor Gibson – 6’2″ – Post – Bishop McNamara
Taylor GibsonTaylor gave the Mustangs their only lead of the game finishing a backdoor cut for the opening score of the game that resulted In a three point play. She finished with nine points and played tough inside matching up most of the game with a player six inches taller than her. Taylor was one of the players that continued to show effort as the game started getting out of hand.
Treasure Hunt – 6’1′ – Wing – Hamilton Heights
Treasure HuntTreasure went on a tear in the third quarter with eight straight points to break the game open. She made the Mustangs pay for leaving her open on the perimeter but also knocked down on of her three triples while being grabbed with a hand in her face. She finished with13 points scoring them all in a short span between the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
Yonta Vaughn – 5’8″ – Point Guard – Bishop McNamara
Yonta VaughnYonta brought in experience coming off the bench after starting every game a year ago as a freshman. She scored 8 points in the game and as Coach Oliver tweaks the lineup I expect Yonta to play a big role with her high level of skill and IQ.
