The gym, full of college scouts, was buzzing about the action on the court. These are 7 things that stuck with me as I watched the final seconds tick down.
- Taylor Henderson is the truth. 22 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals doesn’t even come close to telling the entire story. This young lady has amazing quickness and court presence. Incredibly impressive performance despite having 4 fouls most of the 4th quarter. Definitely one of the 5 best players of the weekend.
- Mia Xerras is an amazing talent, but I am concerned about her. Like Samiyah Suffren of Mallard Creek, Mia Xerras is starting at point guard as a 9th grader for a very good team. I have watched this young lady play since the 6th grade and she is an excellent player and prospect. To her credit, she took the reigns when Taylor Henderson sat most of the 4th quarter and the Mustangs didn’t miss a beat. However, she is dragging that left leg of hers and it’s painful to watch. Her 80 percent is better than most players’ 100, but I just hope that she doesn’t do any significant damage while playing in this compromised state. With her talent and potential, she should be playing the long game and not focused on short term success.
- Kamaria Sheriff of Cuthbertson made several “splash” plays in a losing effort. The 5’11” Junior Forward is a freak athlete with a lot of upside. She had 8 points (including 2 of 2 from 3), 5 rebounds and two big blocks in only 18 minutes on the floor. I look forward to seeing her growth later this season and next.
- Maddie Dellinger is a skilled big with great talent, but will need to be more assertive and aggressive for Cuthbertson to reach it’s potential. Dellinger, a 6 foot Junior, is a coach’s dream. Talented, unselfish and fundamentally sound. Her stat line looks decent 13 points and 9 rebounds, but the reality is, she’s got to be more SELFISH. She shot 4 of 8 from the field and 5 of 6 from the line. I want more attempts from Maddie and it will translate to more wins for the Cavaliers.
- Kailyn Wimple does all the dirty work for Myers Park. 9 rebounds in 20 minutes of court time, numerous solid screens and a half dozen more winning plays made this young lady irreplaceable for the Mustangs. She in particular got under the skin of Cuthbertson’s 5’11” Senior Guard, Lillian Anderson. Anderson, the sharpshooting, Senior leader of the squad uncharacteristically lost her poise and ended up charging and turning the ball over twice due to Wimple and the smothering defense of 5’9″ Freshman Wing Ava Davis.
- 5’11” Sophomore PF Alex Cory had an incredibly productive 10 minutes of action. Her 6 points 2 rebounds and an assist were decisive in the Myers Park triumph.
- Nia Nelson is a “glue girl”. The 5’10” Junior Wing is a “Swiss Army Knife” based on her great versatility. She can guard 4 positions on defense and also contributed 7 points on the offensive end. She will be a key factor in any success that the Mustangs have moving forward.
