National Trail just came off a huge league win over Miami East, while Brookville was looking for their first win of the season.
National Trail earned a hard-fought 40-26 win over the Blue Devils with a big game from senior Makena Laird.
Game MVP
Laird showcased her skills most of the game with a variety of shots. I had undervalued her skills and she put together a productive first half with all 13 of her points in the first 16 minutes. Ran the floor well, connected on three from long range, and was a good leader for the NT team looking to continue their strong early season start.
Top Bench Performer
I was impressed with National Trail sophomore J’da Jackson coming off the bench, as the sophomore played her role well and game some quality minutes. She did a nice job with her back to the basket, could drive to the rim or shoot from the three. Defensively, she can stop her opponent, and just needs to continue to learn the game at a faster speed.
Underrated Player
One player to keep an eye on for the Blazers was Skyler Ward, only a sophomore for National Trail. Her potential has yet to be reached, but when she was on the floor, she produced. Made strong moves to the rim, could finish at the basket and is a heady player. Just needs more experience but on the right path.
Underclassman Award
A kid who has improved and is becoming one of the more versatile post players in the area is Brookville sophomore Malarie Ross. She can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, Can also post up her defender and does a good job on the boards. Has the knack for getting to the free throw line.
Best Passer
Although she is only a freshman, Jackie Fye is a work in progress for the Blue Devils. Has good handles, can drive or score from the outside and can distribute the ball. Needs to gain more experience against the older guards which will improve her game. Can shoot the three. Still does some freshman things, but all freshman do. She has a good ceiling.
Play of the Game
If you saw the opening quarter, you would have seen the shot that set things in motion for the Blazers. Laird connected on a shot well behind the three-point range as the buzzer sounded, opening up the game to a 9-3 lead and they never looked back. It was the fifth point of the quarter for Laird.
Run of the Game
The Blazers ran off the final seven points of the first quarter, and the first 10 out of the second to opened up a close game to a comfortable 21-9 lead at the half. Laird actually had a personal stretch of 13 consecutive points scored.
