The biggest surprise to me actually occurred off the court as South Laurel’s Rachel Presley was ruled ineligible until February despite having played varsity volleyball all fall. It hasn’t slowed South Laurel down yet as they rolled through Lincoln County on Monday but there will be occasions when Presley’s size and low post presence will be missed.
Mercy absolutely dismantling Eastern. Our Ryan Moore provided a tremendous breakdown of the game that you can find HERE. But no one could have predicted Mercy would come out and more than double up the Eagles in their season debut. The Jaguars appear to be motivated this year after falling short of their goals last year. They followed that win with another big win over Bardstown.
Ballard beating Collins by 10 at Collins. Collins won the 8th last season and look capable of winning it again this year. Meanwhile, Ballard was predicted to be a middle of the pack team in a loaded 7th region. Kiarah Carney went for 33 points for Ballard and continues to prove herself as one of the most underrated Seniors in the state. On a positive note, Collins Senior Olivia Federle scored her 2,000th career point for the Titans this week.
Scott County’s Morgan DeFoor dominanting through two games. The Morehead State signee is off to a running start this year as she scored 28 in a win over Lexington Catholic and then followed that with 17 points on Wednesday in another win. With graduation and transfers to Great Crossing, there was some uncertainty around the Lady Cards roster. Morgan has stepped up in a big way and looks ready to make a run at 11th region player of the year.
CAL knocking off Butler. Sophomore Jaya McClure led the Centurions as 3 players finished in double figures and another ended with 9. They only shot 33% from the field but an ugly win is a win nonetheless. CAL continues to establish themselves as a force in the 6th region.
Simon Kenton beating Ryle by 27. Ryle losing at all this early is an eyebrow raiser but the fact that they were so thoroughly dominated makes this season look even more open than it already appeared to be with so much talent in the Senior class. Simon Kenton plays Sacred Heart on Saturday at Dixie Heights. If the Lady Pioneers take that game too, there may not be a more impressive set of wins this season.
Recruiting News:
Speaking of Simon Kenton, Senior Maggie Jones made her commitment to Thomas More this week. Jones is one of the best players in the 8th region and will be a nice player at Thomas More.
South Warren’s Brooke Stevenson was offered by Milligan College last week. Centre and Bellarmine have previously offered Stevenson.
Barbourville Senior Abbagail Smith is off the board to Union College so she won’t need to go far to get to her college classes. Smith is a good scorer who is one of the better Class A players in the 13th region.
South Laurel sharpshooter Syndie Hall committed to Lindsey Wilson. She chose Lindsey over a handful of other offers. One of Kentucky’s top shooters, Hall is the third South Laurel Senior to commit and sign this season.
