Continue ReadingPrep Girls Hoops California is taking a stab at ranking the Top Area Schools in SoCal with a Top 10 of our own. Things have changed alot since we put out the Area Top Teams Rankings early before the season started; new teams have beaten other teams in tournament play and rankings have changed since then. Sierra Canyon still is atop the rankings for us, but many others below have changed positions, take a look at the new rankings here and think about how we formatted this system. We have seen all of these teams play numerous times and too us, we believe head-to-head is key, but some other variables come into play, such as strength of schedule and which tournaments you play in and where. Here we go, hope you enjoy this as much as we do. We will see most in Tarkanian Classic this week; then up North the West Coast Jamboree, rankings will change again before league starts this year.
#6 – Chaminade Prep HS
Coach Kelli Di Muro: Record: (4-2) defeating the following teams this season; Serra, Redondo Union, Birmingham and Village Christian. They are led by 2020, 6’2, SF, Alexis Whitfield (UW Commit), 2020, 5’4, PG, Jasmine Rodriguez, 2023, 5’5, PG, Kayla Cabaccang and 2023, 5’9, F, Jazi Forbes.
This team is unpredictable in a good way, they are proven champions in their division, but they are a team that has not played to their potential this year. I have seen them play about 3 times this off- season and they tend to be solid, but something is not quite right about the group yet. They are long in the post, they are quick and athletic on the perimeter, this is the strength that keeps them above their opponents. They are truly led by UW commit Alexis Whitfield and she is the total package in my opinion, she can handle it, she can put in on the floor and take you to the rim, she can shoot the midrange out to the three. She needs to stay healthy for them to repeat this year, that is the bottom line, nothing else.
#7 – ML King HS
Coach Jesus Martinez: Record (6-4); Interesting Record here; They are led by 2020, 5’11, Nyah and Olivia Moran (NAU commits) and 2020, 5’6, PG, Raya Smith.
King is another program that can surprise you in a game, they are always tough defensive minded and always have a myriad of talented players. This year they are led by the crafty point guard in Raya Smith, who can break you down, can shoot the midrange and the three pointer, she can play people. Also highlighting things are the twins in Nyah and Olivia Moran, great size for them both and they are both lefty. which is unique in its own right. Both of these girls are players and are a threat to score from anywhere on the court. Expect some good things from them this year.
#8 – Rosary Academy HS
Coach Richard Yoon: Record: (6-3); defeating the following teams; Flintridge Prep, Westchester, Mark Keppel, King and Roosevelt. They are led by 2020, 5’7, PG, Aisha Avinger (SDSU commit), 2020, 5’7, SG, Caylee Santos, 2020, 5’8, CG, Nicole Rodriguez (LMU commit) and 2022, 5’4, PG, Kaylee Byon.
Rosary is always tough as nails, even if they do not have any size, they are dangerous, because everyone on the floor is a threat to score and all of them shoot the three ball. They will pressure you defensively and offensively during the game, they try to speed the game up to play to their strengths. SDSU commit Asia Avinger is the leader of the is group along with LMU commit Nicole Rodriguez, both are good with the handle and can score in a variety of ways. Kaylee Byon is the maverick young player who is spunky and always ready to represent for her team, she can score in many ways as well, watch out for her on the floor this season.
#9 – Corona Centennial HS
Coach Martin Woods: Record (6-1); defeated the following teams; West, Orangewood Academy, Windward, Marlborough and Lynwood. They are led by 2021, 5’5, PG/CG, Jayda Curry and 2021, 5’9, SG, Trinity San Antonio as captains of this years team as well as 2020s, 5’10, SF, Monikque Lightfoot and 5’11, SF, Brook Svoboda. Also cannot forget 2021, 6’0, SF, Katherine Davis.
This group is scrappy and hungry to beat a good team for namesake, this is their entire existence of being right now. Do they have the right pieces to put this run together this year without the presence of 2021, Jessica Peterson who transferred to Etiwanda HS. That is the question we need answered this season, is 2021, 5’5, PG, Jayda Curry and 2021, 5’9, SG, Trinity San Antonio enough to be the Top Dog in their league as well as the playoffs, it all remains to be seen, like the toughness though, exciting to watch…
#10 – Bishop Montgomery High School
Coach Noelle Quinn: Record (4-2); losses to Mater Dei and Lynwood; they are led by 2022, 6’0, SF, Khylee Pepe. 2020s, Nicole Hayase, Cyan Dyke, Kayla Moody, Autumn Kirby, April Perez and Emaya Trahan.
Bishop Montgomery is that team that you have to take a good look at, Noelle Quinn has these girls playing and they are going to be really good this year as well. They almost gave Sierra Canyon a shocker last year in the Semi Final, but did not have enough in the tank to outlast the onslaught brought by Sierra Canyon. Watch Bishop Montgomery this season, they will be just as tough or even tougher than last years team.
